Searched, but couldn’t find much on this topic, hence starting a new thread.
We have a 2001 Matiz in the family which gets used only for school pick-up (8 kms/day of total driving). With the young one insisting on school bus from this year, the usage would come down further. I’m wondering what to do with this car now:
I can try to keep using the car once a week and keep it running until it becomes too cumbersome/expensive. But, when the day comes, is there a procedure to “de-register” the car? After that, I presume I can sell it off as scrap. If I sell it as scrap, is it my responsibility to ensure that the car is unusable on the road?
Many Thanks,
Su-47
go to the place opp Russell market and sell it for scrap. @ 22/kg they will give you a certificate of destruction.
The trouble is that the certificate of destruction is not a legally valid document.
If the scrap dealer sells it off to someone who keeps driving it (without papers or with forged papers), you would be held responsible by the RTO. You need to get 'permission' from the RTO to sell it off to the scrap dealer and then 'register' the 'sale' at the RTO by submitting the receipt from the scrap dealer.
I got this info from an agent some time back, not sure about the full procedure.
If you want to simply sell it off to scrap, atleast make sure that the engine number / chassis number on the car is erased.
You could donate the car to a charitable organisation / NGO that might use it for a noble cause.

hey Su,
why do you want to do this at all ? why dont think of preserving the car ? why cant you have it, it may fetch you a very good price after sometime as an antique! think over !
OR
if you prefer to go as per GTO's suggestion, i know a very good charitibale trust which is doing a great job with the spastic kids. Let me know, i can put you on to them.
One man's garbage is another man's gold. Sell the car for whatever it is worth.

It is occupying precious parking space, which someone else in the apt. can use.
Sure, can think about donating it as well. But, would think that the NGOs would want a car that is easy to maintain and run.
Greenhorn, thanks for the link, very informative!
Know someone who recently bought a Matiz for 65K. Thats not a bad price!

@Su-47, can you mention the condition and the odometer reading of the car. From what you have mentioned, it is in a good working condition and how did you conclude that it has no resale value? Like Mpower has mentioned 65 k (or even 40-50) is a good price
This is an interesting dilemma. I have a 2006 petrol Swift that is still in very decent condition (touch wood!) Lately have been toying with the idea of upgrading to a bigger diesel vehicle but the resale price quoted is terrible! I would rather retain the car but who has the space to park it, not to mention the burden of petrol prices!
One option I can suggest: if you have a relative you are particularly fond of, you can think of gifting it to them to use. My nephew will turn 18 in a few years and am toying with the idea of running it till then and doing this. Don't know whether it makes sense but I'd rather someone needy used it rather than it going into the hands of greedy dealers!
Edit: GTO's idea is also fantastic. Need to check with a couple of charities that I am close to. Thanks!
Another idea is to use it/donate to engineering institutes (or even amateur innovators) who need a car shell/body for projects such as converting to electrical/solar car. Matiz will make a nice platform for such projects
Could it be useful to training institutes for mechanics (such as Govt run Industrial Training Institutes etc) for their practical lessons?
@Su-47, I find GTO's option the best, 2nd would be selling it of to some used car dealer/
2rd option is Our Own
Giveaway Thread
^^
That will be the pinnacle of the giveaway thread.
Someone willing to give away a car. :)
But on serious note,
1. Gift it to some young relative. Will help him a lot in dating business.
2. Sell it for whatever you can get for it.
3. Donate it to charity.
Do not scrap it.
Please.
