Beware of selling old car

Hi,
I gave my car at the Thane showroom of VW & received a delivery note from the showroom. Today after 10 months I saw my car in Vashi (Navi mumbai). I had a long chase thru the by-lanes of Vashi till koparkhairne and finally stopped the car and spoke to the driver about the ownership & to my utter surprise the car was still in my name.

Please advice on SOS basis. What do i need to do for the same?

regards
KD

Re: Beware of selling old car

If you have the contacts of that person, take the papers from him, get it transferred to his name (at your cost) and then return the papers to him.

Someone I know did the same when he started receiving challans for his old car.

Re: Beware of selling old car

There is a Form20 or something for ownership transfer. IF that document is signed by both parties, It is valid that you have sold the car, even if it continues to be in your name.

This will save you if any legal issues arise due to some accident / anti-social activities.

I had this query.

I am about to sell my car. Can someone please explain the legal procedures and documentations to be taken care of?

It is pretty simple.

The responsibility to register the car in the buyer's name is of the buyer and not the seller.

There is a form available for ownership transfer(Form20) or something stating that you Mr xxxx sole the car <model> for an amount of <rupees> and to be signed by both parties.

Once you have this form in orignal, you are safe. Even if some untoward incident happens, you are safe as long as you provide a photocopy of this document. No legal charges can be pressed on you.
