High Points:- The Sail is one of Chevrolet's best selling global products with over 6,00,000 units sold till date. Most of the exports are currently from China.
- It is built on Chevrolet's new global platform on which the GM technical center in Bangalore worked for almost 2 years.
- Mid 'LS' variant comes equipped with standard driver airbag and optional ABS+EBD.
- Chevy's standard warranty is 3 yrs / 100,000 kms with 5 yrs / 150,000 kms on engine and transmission components.
- The optional 3 year 'Chevrolet Promise' will take care of not just the consumables and labor, but also parts like clutch & pressure plate, release bearing, wiper blades, brake pads & also headlamp bulbs! This is valid for 3 years / 45,000 kms.
- This is Chevrolet's 1st offering in 2013, the Enjoy (MUV) should be out in the next couple of months too.
- Currently, GM is the 5th largest car manufacturer in India employing over 4,500 people at Halol, Talegaon, Bangalore & Gurgaon.
- GM's plant in Halol, Gujarat has a annual capacity of 85,000 units. GM is planning to introduce LCVs and hence Halol is undergoing expansion.
Exteriors:
Chevrolet calls it 'Dynamic Sculpture Design', is it though?
Nah!
Nothing wrong, but nothing to write home about either. A Decent looking car offering significant space at the given price.
Big Chevy bow-tie accentuated in Chrome.
Illuminated part is the parking bulb. The chrome light surrounds are not a part of the standard equipment.
A better looking boot design than the Maruti Dzire. Does not look like an afterthought from the sides or the rear.
Chevy's tail-lamp designs have always been decent looking in this segment. The Aveo sedan also has a decent looking set of lamps at the back.
Front wheel with disc brakes (shown on the left). Rear gets drum brakes. 14" 8-spoke alloy wheels on the LT variant.
ABS moniker on the front quarter panel.
Optional chrome door handle inserts.
Power adjustable ORVMs even on the base variant.
Undefined fuel filler cap.
370 liters of boot space.

Interiors:
Now Chevrolet calls this as 'Corvette Inspired' interior design - seems pretty spartan to us.
The aging Aveo has a more premium looking steering wheel. This one looks very plain.
Average looking speedo console. The digital tachometer won't please the enthusiasts.
The wooden trim is a stick-on accessory, center console comes standard in a silver metallic paint.
Bluetooth enabled HU. A 2-DIN unit with a single DIN for the player, while the other half is vacant for oddities.
Controls for the ORVMs & Headlamp level. Storage cubicle on the left.
Glovebox is tad small. Open storage place above.
2 cup holders between the front seats. No driver armrest.
Leather wrapped gear-knob and power window controls ahead.
Seat quality is mediocre. No height adjustment for the driver's seat.
Front door pad with bottle holder. Dual tone interior looks good here.
Integrated rear seat headrests. Storage space under the rear bench. No 60:40 split.
Rear speakers on the door.

the hatchback was a disappointment in terms of looks, but its metamorphosis into a sedan has completely changed its looks and sharacter. this is now probable the best looking entry level sedan. great VFM and kudos to GM to not skimp on safety. this one deserves to be a success.
That's great VFM pricing + ABS standard across variants.
This surely will give good competition to Etios, eCS, Classic, if not to D'zire.
This actually looks a better car to own compared to D'zire but Maruti has strong brand value & service advantage.
Good luck GM
GM website is not updated with specs & features.
Still showing Coming soon.
Great VFM package IMO.
The sedan definitely looks better than the hatch. This is quite an exception, in most cases the sedans derived from the hatch looked awful (Dzire, no offense) but this is remarkable.
According to brochure, the ABS is not standard across all variant. Am I getting it wrong? please:
Nice pricing. But GM is not an aspirinational brand in India so I would not expect it to be a chart topper in its segment, but definitely would garner some volumes that is badly needed for GM!
Cheers!
Excellent pricing by GM after the disaster pricing of Sail-UVA. Also looking at brochure, I can confirm that ABS is not standard across all models. And it is only available in LS ABS and LT ABS model. Driver airbag is available from 3 models out of 4.
I think this car will be a moderate success as
* It is far better looking than other sedans extended from hatchback
* It is VFM with good cabin space
* Excellent ride quality
* Decent specs for LS and LT variants
* And powered by national diesel engine with better tuning for city driving :)

1. Way more space at the rear. Rear legroom is supposedly on par with Etios.
2. Ride quality on our roads is supposed to be a benchmark.
3. Engine is better tuned than Dzire. lesser turbo lag and a bit more pep.
4. Looks like a proper sedan not chopped.
5. Bigger boot that is not there just for namesake.
5. Decent features. |
On the first two counts, I agree with you, but with a caveat that the same parameters make the Verito a good contender too. On the engine front, I do not know how the Sail drives, but I don't find too much scope for improvement in the Dzire, at least going by my experience. On the looks front, we may agree to disagree, as I know I might one of the few who actually like the new Dzire's boot. And looking at the spec- sheet of the Sail LT and the Dzire ZDi, I cannot think of anything more significant than a Bluetooth stereo that the Sail offers more, and it doesn't come with a driver seat height adjuster.
But you summarized everything, thanks!

Someone who is not being arm-twisted into buying a Maruti, I suppose! :)
...... (which means they have covered all the R&D already) and comes with lot more features, who wouldn't be enthused? |
:) That is not one, but two good reasons!
But, hasn't GM got the advantage of a Chinese platform which in turn is based on a still- older European platform as against the R&D amortization that Maruti has had on the Dzire?
People, I am sorry if I sounded unreasonable, but at prices similar to the Dzire, or the Verito (5.16L - 7.19L), I was just thinking the Sail wouldn't be as much a success that it deserves to be. Look at what has become of the UVA- priced between the Ritz and the Swift, in no man's land, no stand- out USP- it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Ever thought what would have been the reaction if they had followed the Figo's 3.84L - 5.99L pricing instead of the now 4.44L - 6.62L?
Sail hatchback was not just mispriced - it was also not good looking enough - downright ugly. It should have been launched lower.
Sail sedan is quite good looking - Chevy is a much better brand than Fiats, Verito et al - and its much better looking than the Ford classic, Toyota Etios and Honda Amaze.
With such great pricing, it should do well. Only the City, Verna and Fiesta look better than the Sail and they are in a higher segment.
I think Chevy has got a winner here.
All said and done.. the power window switches are placed right ahead of the gear lever. It is the same position in which the old Indica DLG had its placed, needless to say, the MOST uncomfortable position to place them and not to mention, the wider placement in the sail is downright sad to look at, a deal breaker for me.
Specifications:
Do take a look at our Chevrolet Sail U-VA Hatchback review to get a feel of what the Sedan might be like :

The website is up and running, the features list does not specify ABS and EBD in the the base and LS trim. All this talk about the car being VFM goes out the window with the non inclusion of essential safety feature of ABS and EBD.
The LS version with ABS is almost 7L ex showroom which is on par with the competition.
Saw the Sail Sedan outside Grand Hyatt Hotel Mumbai last night. I think they had a launch event in the hotel. Must say it looked pretty neat and as others have pointed out, it did not look just like a boot stuck to the rear of the hatchback sail. In fact to me it looked better than the hatch. Managed a pic only of the rear but my blackberry camera quality sucks.:Frustrati
How good (or bad) is the headroom at the rear? From the pics, it doesn't look too good.
