Chandigarh: Road Tax Increased

Just came to know that the Road tax has been doubled in Chandigarh effective 01-Apr-13.
Got my car on March 28 and now I will have to fork up twice as much as road tax.

I miss those good ole days when total road tax was 2500 or so irrespective of the vehicle bought.

But maybe on the brighter side this may dampen peoples spirit to purchase more cars/SUV's leading to lesser traffic on the road.

The earlier slab was 3%. Has it been increased to 6% now? Even then it will work out to be cheaper than Delhi and Punjab.

Yes, but not Haryana. For e.g. I was planning my long impending purchase from Chandigarh, but now I might as well get it registered at Gurgaon itself.

BTW, even in Ggn, the 10-20 lakh cars fall in the 8% bracket now

Thank God, it's still 2.5% in Uttaranchal, which may turn out now to be the cheapest in the country today. Don't know for how many days though...

When we checked last month, tax for Rexton MT(below 20 slab) was 5%, hiked there too.

Nope, as per my information and their official website, it still says 2.5% (updated 01-04-2013) -

Maybe they passed on some wrong information to you.

We checked with Rishikesh RTO, personally, the rates on website are not correct. The final difference was only 1% compared to Haryana, so my friend got the Rexton registered in Gurgaon.

yes, I know. Earlier slab for the cars I am considering (Jetta/new Octavia) was 6%.
BTW, are you sure about the London registration cost (UK)

Oops, you are right. Confirmed now from my RTO agent. It has been 3 months and they have increased the rates -
Below 10 lakh cost - 4%
Above 10 lakh cost - 5%

re: Chandigarh: Road Tax Increased

For cars the new tax slabs for the Chandigarh RTO are-
above 20 lakh rupees - 8%
less than 20 lakh rupees - 6%

Just two slabs now unlike the three slabs earlier.

Re: Chandigarh: Road Tax Increased

Bumping up an old thread -

I had visited the Honda showroom here today to check out the Honda City and pick up the price list as I am planning to purchase it in Feb 2016. However after a little conversation with the SE there at the dealership, it came to my notice that Chandigarh RTO rates are being revised. The current 6% tax on cars under 20L is being increased to 8%, effective from 01st Jan 2016. Although, I looked all over the internet but could not find any related article on this. Could anyone throw some light on this if this information is indeed true or was the SE misleading me into purchasing the car right now as its the year end and sales are a little sluggish in December.

I doubt there is any such increase in consideration as Road Tax is now almost same in Haryana , Punjab & Chandigarh . I will suggest to pick in 2016 , at time of resales Model Year affects price no matter what dealerships tell you now , unless you are getting some special deal .

Thanks for your reply. No, there were next to negligible discounts or offers on the City and that's why planning to get a 2016 made model only. Even a 2% increase in road tax won't be a deterrent in my purchase decision if its even true, but I was skeptical that the SE was making a false claim regarding this and wanted to confirm about the same here.

Road tax for cars below 20 lakh is already 8 percent in haryana so if it is 6 percent in chd then it is definitely lower and may be up for revision
