Rumour: General Motors working on sub-4 meter Chevrolet Enjoy compact MPV

A big success for General Motors in China, the Chevrolet Enjoy MPV was launched in India a couple of months ago. The Enjoy MPV has been registering decent numbers, attributable to the sharp pricing that General Motors has managed for the vehicle. The American car maker seems to have big plans for the Enjoy MPV in the coming years with an AutocarIndia Report suggesting that GM is working on a sub-4 meter version of the Enjoy MPV. The sub-4 meter version of the Enjoy MPV could hit the Indian market in 2015, which is a couple of years from now. Team-BHP's crack team has come up with a bunch of speculative renders to highlight how the Enjoy Compact MPV could look like. Meanwhile, The sub-4 meter Enjoy MPV is said to retain the wheelbase of the full sized 7 seat Enjoy, with the chop job focusing on the boot.

A shorter boot would mean that the Enjoy MPV's sub-4 meter variant will need to sacrifice the third row of seats, effectively making the MPV a 5 seater. The shorter length of the Enjoy will mean attractive excise benefits for General Motors, which will most certainly be passed on to the car buyer. So, the Enjoy in sub-4 meter guise is expected to be priced at about 50,000 lesser than the 7 seat variant. We've seen Mahindra take this approach with the Quanto, which is a sub-4 meter chopped version of the Xylo MPV. India is no stranger to cars with reduced lengths. The Tata Indigo eCS, the Mahindra Quanto and Verito Vibe are three examples that comes instantly to mind. These cars are priced lower than their longer siblings and also bring aboard aspects of practicality such as easy manouvering and parking.

The sub-4 meter Enjoy MPV is expected to retain the 1.3 liter turbo diesel engine as standard and GM does have a 1.2 liter petrol engine in its engine line up, if it intends to launch a petrol variant of the shortened Enjoy. The Chevrolet Enjoy is rebadged and restyled product with Chinese origins. General Motors' Chinese partner, SAIC, developed the Enjoy as the Wuling Hongguang MPV, aimed at the people mover market in China. A best seller in China, the Hongguang is also exported to many emerging markets under the Chevrolet CN100 badge. In India, General Motors will be hoping that the 5 seat and 7 seat versions of the Chevrolet Enjoy will deliver big volumes in the booming MPV market.

Tata motors should plan something similar to revive sales. Indigo CS has resulted in some good sales when there was no other player in sub- 4 meter market. Now with availability of national engine at their disposal and may be even the CR4 engine too, they can plan a similar product for small families.

Very happy to see success of such cars in India, we will soon have (early 2014)

Sub- 4 meter Jazz
Sub- 4 meter Ecosport (premium product for 2013 winter sales)

along with other operating models, I think this new segment will be full of options for the buyers.

Is it time to say goodbye to small hatchbacks?

I would think that this would also come in a 7 seater variant with 2 side facing folding seats in the rear like the Quanto

What MPV? This is going to be just a tall, ugly Panda-wannabe hatchback with Chinese origins. Good for General Motors.

GMs answer to the Quanto it seems. LOL. The car is already compact looking, wonder how the chop-job would make it look.

I hope they work on GM adopts its Chinese stepchild into its fold by giving it the Chevy split grille, as well spruce up the interiors a bit. This way they can launch the face lifted Enjoy along with the sub 4m one.

I think its a competent vehicle, its just the "chinese" tag that brings more scorn to it.

At 5 lakhs it might bring some more volume. GMs strategy seems to be flooding the market with cheap offerings to bring in a respectable sale total. Many models selling from the 500 - 2000 range. None of these cars seem aimed at bringing volumes, like the Amaze for Honda or a Duster for Renault.

The way they are advertising the Enjoy is even worse than the Sail. The last best ad from Chevy was for the Cruze. How many people apart from auto enthusiasts would know such a car exists?? Even Nissan managed to get attention to the Sunny with their ridiculous CAAAAAR ad, atleast people know the car from the ad. Can you say the same about any chevy car today??
