Okay, this is total mix up. Rack & Pinion is the underlying steering technology most commonly used. So most of the cars you see has it. In a standard steering system, the user uses his muscle power to turn the steering, which through a rack & pinion, turns the wheels. Powes assited systems just use engine power (Hydraulic Power steering), or an electric motor (EPS) to reduce the user effort in turing the steering. So, having an EPS doesn't change the underlying steering technology, which is mostly rack & pinion. There is another technology called Recirculating Ball steering- don't know who uses it.

I think most of the auto sales people are ill trained about what is there in the car. So this whole story might have been fuelled by one of those sales person answering wrongly to a query.

Maybe they changes from EPS to HPS because the EPS feels too light and being very vague.. (case in point being wagonR and NHC).

Heavier tata vehicles use re-circulating ball steering, Sumo, Safari?, etc..

If EPS is going out, then what is the PS mechanism, Hydraulic?

sad i liked EPS more on my city than what HPS i have on the accent. its fun really since i do not go fast anymore. in city its a boon. dont know what car companies are thinking most of the times.

THis is correct. WHen I went to take the test drive of the swift beofre finalizing on the Palio, the sales rep at Bimal took me on a vxi. I commented to him that the steering felt a little tight for an EPS, unlike the esteem. He told me that the lxi and vxi are now coming with HPS in the interests of costs and only the zxi comes with EPS.

Maybe even teh ZXI is now coming with HPS!

anyways, IMHO, HPS is better than EPS because u still get some amount of feedback in HPS. EPS seems totally disconnected from the road and while it may be good for city commute, it can actually be dangerous in high speeds( unless of course it is speed sensitive)

I bought my Swift Vxi recently and lemme assure you EPS is still present - the EPS lamp glows in the instrument panel when I turn on the ignition. Also judging from the way the steering behaves, I can yet state that its EPS at work.

Also WhiteKnight is right - saying EPS and Rack&Pinion are counterparts is like saying a car can run only on rims without any tyres.

What the sales rep told you is a complete fabrication - you should have sent this feedback to Maruti directly and watched the sales rep call you and correct himself! Almost all cars in India these days come with EPS - not HPS; even the Indica for that matter.
HPS is only used these days in large commercial vehicles like trucks and buses as EPS would be totally ineffective there.

I was under impression that at high speeds (Say above 60-80 KMPH) the power steering gets cut off for safety... Make me correct if I am wrong.

Yes the power of the EPS system is reduced considerably but its not completely cut off....

Try it... go to 100 switch off engine.... steering would feel different... (don't try it at home :))

I meant the same thing. hydraulic power assisted steering as in baleno.
But 1 thing the light steering of swift was a good feature as it tightens up necessarily with speeds

Hey Hari_rama, thats news to me!!

cars with eps are usually lighter and stressfree to drive in the city though feedback from the wheels to the driver is less than the hps.the ikon and palio/siena/petra still use the hps which makes them better handlers and more communicative at high speeds.even the nhc has eps compared to the hps on the older city...and u know hich one is preferred for sheer handling and driving potential.plz correct me if im wrong anywhere.

Thank you for the info, I was not aware of any cars using Recirculating ***** steering. I think they have a slightly vague feel compared to rack & Pinion ones

I got that buddy. I was refering to the link you have given were the guy was saying "The car instead comes with Rack & Pinion type of steering wheel. The technolgy is very old & puts constant pressure on the engine. I am not sure why them have made such a decision. But I am disappointed"
This is what set me write the explanation

I like the EPS in my Swift very much. Its really enjoyable taking it through sharp turns at slow speeds. Hope they will not do any changes with it for the new cars

Yesterday i took the delivery of the Brand New Swift vxi abs. The EPS is very much present in the car, even in the dash the eps light glows when the ignition is on and under the hood also we can see the eps console.
