BMW will launch the new Z4 roadster sDrive35i sports car in November this year, taking the tally to its 3rd launch in 3 months.
Globally, the BMW Z4 is available with 3 engines- a 4 cylinder 2.0 litre and two 6 cylinder 3.0 litre blocks churning out 340 PS and 306 PS.
BMW will offer the Z4 in the sDrive35i variant with the 6 cylinder 3.0 litre unit in the 306 PS state of tune.
The sDrive35i produces a maximum output of 300 HP, and peak torque of 300 pound-feet which is spread throughout a broad rev range of 1,400 to 5,000 rpm. This variant Z4 weighs over 1500 kgs.
Under the hood, 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six owes its light weight to its composite magnesium/aluminum crankcase, cylinder head cover made of a special synthetic material and lightweight camshafts with aluminum VANOS control unit.
The Z4 will be equipped with the 7 speed dual clutch transmission from the M5 and is rated at 17 mpg in city and 24 mpg on highway.
Standard equipment for the Z4 includes leatherette upholstery, dual zone automatic climate control, an AM/FM/CD stereo system with HD Radio and AUX and USB inputs, Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, rain-sensing wipers, heated mirrors, power-adjustable seats, bi-xenon headlights and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The new Z4 will be priced higher than the outgoing model with expected tag of 70 lakhs +.
The launch will be followed by the 3 series GT and another model in the early quarters of next year.
BMW India is also set to spend Rs 390 crore at its Chennai plant for adding a new assembly line, taking the total capacity to 14,000 units a year.
With this investment, the German luxury car manufacturer will be able to locally assemble eight products from the current six models.
The company sells 14 models in India and, till last year, it was the market leader in the luxury car segment in the country outselling both its rivals Audi and Mercedes.
Currently, the first line runs in two shifts where 1 Series, 3 Series and compact SUV X1 are produced. The second line will have assembly for new 5 series, 7 series and Mini Countryman.
Philipp von Sahr, President of BMW Group India, is quoted as:
“We will expand our product portfolio by launching a number of products which will include refresh models as well as new introduction. We will add two new products by the next year and also will launch Z4 Roadster in November this year.”
