Small fact: The Chevrolet Forester was (and is) the only car with a boxer engine in India, south of 1 crore. (Not sure about the Porsches):uncontrol

Tata Group had a 'Harrier' in its portfolio, long before Tata Motors launched the Harrier earlier this year.

Meet the humble Tata Stryder Harrier. Its a MTB sold by Tata International.

Btw, it was also news for me to learn that Tata also sells bicycles.

Talking about that engine. Do we have a list of different cars that engine powered in the Country

Would definitely be the record holder in the country

Here's some very interesting trivia.

2 of the 3 students who were testing the VWs that blew the lid off the emissions scam - Arvind Thiruvengadam and Hemanth Kappanna - are Indian clap:clap:.

I was in Kolkata during the monsoon of 1978. Lots of new Ambassador Mark 3's were seen everywhere as it was the best selling car in Kolkata then. A Deluxe model was just introduced with a higher price tag. It had no badging, but the speedo plus four gauges ( Temp + Fuel + Oil + Amp) with the full black dashboard was a distinguishing feature. This was in contrast to the body coloured dashboard with the speedo and two gauges (Fuel + Amp) for the Standard model. The Deluxe models had also just been started by PAL. PAL had commenced badging these with the Deluxe BE and later Deluxe BU badges.

This was as a result of the Government of India losing a case against its own dreaded price control regime in the Supreme Court sometime in 1977 against automakers. The Mark 3 prices zoomed from Rs 22,000 to around Rs 32,000, while the Premier car prices spiralled to Rs 30,000. The deluxe variants soon followed.

Back to Kolkata and the monsoon over there. The unprecented deluge of 1978 was such that the Metro was entirely flooded for quite a few days which many Calcuttans had never seen in the recent history. Statesman was the leading English newspaper apart from Amrita Bazar Patrika. The Telegraph was yet to enter the scene. The Statesman soon after the deluge carried an amusing anecdote. A customer had purchased a brand new Ambassador. Rain water was trickling into the car through some beading and the car was taken to the dealer.

The showroom person remarked "do not see the body, see the engine."

The newspaper published this as soon as the news percolated !

And how things change in 5 years!!

Volvo definetely hasn't given up and today has a few best in the segment models, giving tough competition to the German Trio. :D

I came to learn from a post by a member way back in 2011 that the Ford Figo has a 150cc compressor, which is huge when compared to the segment it belongs to. I believe the competition has way smaller compressors. (link to the mentioned post - https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-...010-a-358.html)

What's more, the Getz had a 155cc compressor apparently while the i20 has a paltry 90cc compressor (Source - https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techn...ml#post2629974)

Came across this on LinkedIn about the story behind the name Tata Sumo:

Quote:

Do you know why Tata Sumo is named so? It has nothing to do with the Japanese wrestling.

Every day top executives of Tata Motors used to take lunch together but from some days, Sumant Moolgaokar used to take his car and go out during Lunch Hours and come back as soon as the Lunch Break was over.

There was a grapevine that he was offered lunch at a Five Star Hotel by some dealers of Tata.

One day when some executives followed him during Lunch Break, they were surprised to see that he stopped his car at one Highway Dhaba, ordered food and sat with the drivers of trucks who were eating food at that dhaba.

He discussed with them what was good and what was bad in a Tata Truck, jotted down and came back to his office. He used to improve upon the experiences of drivers.

Such was Sumant Moolgaokar's zeal for improving the Tata Vehicles.

Tata Sumo is the biggest corporate tribute paid by any company to it's executive. Su stands for Sumant and Mo stands for Moolgaokar in this brand name.

Today is the death anniversary of Sumant Moolgaokar. Sincere Tributes to Sumant Moolgaokar.
