Delhi: Online auction of fancy car registration numbers

The project which will enable online auctioning to take place for fancy numbers, which has been in the offing for more than an year now, is all set to go online soon. The transport department is awaiting Election Commission permission to do so.

Quote:
The auction will be held every fortnight and about 140 VIP numbers will be available for every series, according to senior government officials.
As part of the project, premium numbers will be auctioned at a base price ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 5 lakh.
The fancy car registration numbers have been divided in five categories with a base price for each.

The transport department will announce the registration numbers, which will be put up for sale fortnightly. "Those interested will have to bid and the highest bidder during the 14-day process will eventually get the number," said the official. The highest bidder will get the premium number.
The decision to auction off the fancy numbers was taken after complaints of corruption in allotting these numbers.

Please note that this is only for Delhi.

A lot of other states already have auction for fancy numbers though it is not an online auction. Is there any advantage with online vs offline auction?

Sounds good. Atleast a person who is hell bent on securing a VIP number can do so now, albeit at a price. However I would still have some apprehensions regarding overall fair implementation of this process.

Interesting play on human psychology; people would suddenly want the number that has the higher bidding even though it may not be what they want the most.

Not sure whether having an auction would change the whole premium no. business for better or worse.

Re: Delhi: Online auction of fancy car registration numbers

Has anyone used this e-auction for getting a desired number allocated? Would be great if you can share experiences.

Not looking for any fancy number as such, but would like to atleast pick the last digit as an even number
