It has been reported that Mr. Mayank Pareek who is designated as Chief Operating Officer (marketing and sales) has quit Maruti Suzuki after nearly 20 years of service with the country's largest carmaker.

According to the people in the knowledge of he is likely to remain part of the automotive industry and may reveal his plans shortly. The reasons for Pareek's departure is not clear, but unconfirmed talks surfaced shortly after, that he might be headed to rival carmaker Tata Motors.

If he is really moving on to Tata Motors, that is really great news! I have been following his press releases/interviews since quite some years now and used to think that he had superb business acumen! However, having said that- he really has not been able to give Maruti the C-Segment sales that the company would have wanted. As for Maruti's bread and butter cars- they sell by themselves automatically thanks to the pricing, the spare parts and their cosmetic special editions. Tata Motors on the other hand has not been doing great sales numbers in any segment whatsoever.

So if he can get Tata Motor's sales charts on fire (in any segment but preferably all segments)- that would prove that he is really very good at what he does!

If it is indeed true that he is headed over to TATA Motors, I think that would be the best proposition for TATA. He may not be replicate the success that Maruti already has, but he surely can bring in some best practices to TATA and that in turn would be good for the end consumers IMHO.

It would be a gain for whichever company he chooses to join and for its customers. He used listen to individual customer complaints and take action on them. I had very positive experience interacting with him when my friend's brand new Ertiga had Oil leak issues.

Thats both good and bad news depending on which side of the fence one is, good for TATA and bad for Maruti for sure.

Have read articles of Mayank travelling constantly across the country and creating micro markets for Maruti such as meeting a group of people engaged in a certain profession and customizing finance options for them thus making way for sales of certain vehicles in their portfolio.

There was an very interesting article around this in one of the business dailies which was could not be traced immediately. However if someone gets a hand of this article, it surely brings out the genius of Mayank in its full glory.

Hopefully TATAs make full use of him and drive home their new range of cars that will be launched in the coming future else frankly their future as a carmaker is at stake.

Maruti's loss completely. Have met him and he does leave quite an impression. The man is a walking encyclopedia of data on the Indian car scene, with an extremely brilliant mind processing information & taking crucial decisions. There's been a lot of shuffling at the top level in Maruti and veterans haven't been happy with it. Some of them lost the freedom they enjoyed once, thanks to interference from Japan.

Perhaps the most competent CEO-material looking at a switch right now. What's more, he knows Maruti inside out, including exactly what makes the company tick. Can't think of any Indian mass market manufacturer who wouldn't want his talent & expertise.

Personally, if I were in his shoes, I wouldn't join Tata Motors. The choices he makes now decide the rest of his career. Look at Arvind Saxena who left Hyundai for a short stint at VW, and is now heading Chevy's incredibly weak Indian business.

When Mayank Pareek told his wife about taking a two-year sabbatical, she was not happy. This was not a sabbatical from work but from the duties at home. Pareek had realised that his company, Maruti, needed all his energy as it prepared to face a slowing economy. The wife, to his immense relief, was supportive.

But what is surprising is that the stock markets have taken the stock price of Maruti to a 52 week high today after this news came out. Should be an interesting one to track from now on seeing that the markets don't think that it has a major impact on the future of the company.

It is a huge loss for Maruti and if he joins a rival then the loss would double. Mr Pareek is one of the best minds at work today in the Indian Auto Industry. He was behind the rural push at Maruti which worked really well.
The Maruti stock started on a weak note today, but then ended in the positive. There are many things that go in the stock market price and we can't always co-relate.

His decision to depart at this juncture, when Maruti is going to launch its predictably the highly successful foray into the C- segment with the Ciaz, is a loss for Maruti as well as for Mr Pareek.

Woah! This is NEWS! IMO Maruti makes such massive numbers mostly because of its brand image (and not particularly on product specs).

Also competition has raised the bar quite high and IMO soon Maruti is going to be done selling in such massive numbers, they're then going to milk their customers from that 'Massive service network' they've built.

So, smart move. IMO since auto companies are quite different, maybe they can consult someone outside on how to market their products. So, he can definitely be consulted for the knowledge.

TATA Motors would be first in line. They've quite a few products in the pipeline, they need to be continued to be developed well and also marketed well (such that they appeal to masses). So in a way he'd be the perfect person for TATA motors. (But maybe not as the MD since, atleast in their business plans, Tata Group follows a certain ideology. And also because they don't pay obscenely massive salaries like others.)

Chevrolet IMO needs a CFO to work closer with the MD/CEO. Their benefit from him would be good, but not very. I could be wrong here though, depends on Chevy's financial support.

Apparently VW & Skoda are looking to change their approach & image of Service. So he could help them abit to market that change.

Mahindra is going out of the sedan/hatch market, maybe they too will need to tweak their Marketing & Sales division for their new(old+Gizmos) (Edit) SUV's / MUV's.

Hyundai would be the chief competitor his clients would be facing. Since
a) they're doing decent numbers, I don't think they'd want more marketing to hire him, and
b) how could he join the '2nd best' after having worked for the 'best'.

Anyway, interesting development!

It is unlikely that he would join any Japanese or Korean management at this point and time; none of the premium Germans are on a lookout for such an expertise as they have been doing good with respect to their projected numbers in India.

GM, Skoda, VW etc have nothing to offer in terms of his expertise to handle mass market.

Tata seems to be the most plausible opportunity for him

- Their is a vacuum as the Tata Motors CEO died recently

- Tata has once managed mass market quite well and would want to gain traction in sales of its products

- Tata has good plans as well as products to offer along with a good pipeline of models

- Management will is there and the company has strong muscle power (availability of funds for investments)

- India is extremely important for Tata Motors, which is not a case with several players operating in India

@GTO, why would you say that moving to Tata would not be a great move. Think of it, VW and Chevy did not really have the right attitude to succeed in India. On the contrary, i thought the Tatas are trying to make a genuine effort to revive themselves in this market. Just trying to understand your point and not really disagreeing to your view
