Re: And the Award for the 'Car with most engines & transmissions' goes to....

Very timely thread. I was just thinking yesterday that in the 4 years that I have owned my Vento the damn thing has had so many engine and transmission changes but the one thing that doesn't change is how it looks! Slightly flattened steering wheel and some twiddling about with the headlamps for the most part. Of course there are admirers of the classic understated look of the original (self and thread starter included) but there is such a thing as eye fatigue!

Re: And the Award for the 'Car with most engines & transmissions' goes to....

Agree that these many options appear have come into being more by default than design. But I'm not complaining.

I for one believe that the A S S & reliability are two of the most important parameters that should go into a car buying decision because that's going to impact the owner as long as they keep the car. From that perspective, not sure VWs make perfect sense as the only car at home for a typical middle class guy with a 50 hour workweek and 2 hour daily commute. We're simply not going to be able to accommodate any breakdowns and ensuing time losses.

But yes, VW will continue to figure in very strongly in any hatch buyers' mind for reasons already well known (solid build, eye candy, feel good factor etc.)

On that note, how about mating the 4 cylinder turbo engine on the TSI with a manual transmission and replacing the 3 cylinder NA unit on the petrol polos? Hey, I can dream

What other engines could Volkswagen plonk into the Polo / Vento / Rapid siblings?

Was on Skoda-India's website for some research. The Skoda Rapid has no less than 24 variants!!! Sure, this includes options like with / without alloy wheels, but a prospective buyer might just reject the Rapid thinking that the salesperson is trying to confuse him .

Don't believe me? Check it out yourself (here).

And yet another update now for the Polo with 1.8 TSI with 189 BHP and 250 Nm torque + 7-Speed DSG
Wonder how long the list will grow.

Add "general updates / facelifts" to that as well!

The Polo has seen one facelift, yes. But more than three updates on features/equipment in the last year or so!

The Vento has seen one update (wheels, colours, equipment) and one facelift and is now slated to be updated again, with new headlights and godknowswhatelse.

When I bought my Polo TSI, it was a few months after the mid-cycle refresh. A couple of months after, they gave it a whole load of features such as a cooled glovebox, cruise control, auto-adjust/auto-fold ORVMs. In just a couple of months, they updated the car even further with a touch-screen amongst other things.

I must say though, the only engine-transmission-car combination that's missing is the Rapid TSI. I'd assumed that Skoda would address that on the Rapid's (surprise, surprise) mid-cycle refresh and second update, but it looks like VW won't allow that here in India.

Actually I remember there were spy shots of a Polo TSI on test (I guess the 2017 Passat thread). It could be the 1.0 TSI that's on sale elsewhere in place of the 1.2 MPI thats on sale in India. So there's likely another engine-tranny combination on cards

Apart from VW, can Hyundai's Venue has a slim chance to be featured here? The GDI DCT one.

It isn’t even close to the Polo (=Vento/Rapid/Ameo) but the winner for 2019 is..

Kia Seltos!

2 petrols (a turbo and a non-turbo) and 1 diesel are fine, but with 3 different transmissions (TC, DCT, CVT)?! Let’s see who can do better.

I would not be surprised if one day, VW just got bored of producing the Polo and Vento. They'd probably say "Listen, if you have a used Polo or Vento or Ameo, bring it to one of our service centres. We'll shoehorn in the 1 litre TSI engine for like 3 lakh rupees and call it a day, ja?"

Indeed!
One can only wish that the 6th gen Polo (globally) was ~60mm shorter to fit the Indian sub-4m tax limit. Alas, it seems we'll be denied a new Polo for quite some time to come.
That being said, this generation is still one of the most elegant hatches on the market here. Some designs are just timeless.
