Motorbeam reports that the Elite i20 cross would have improved breaking with a bigger front disc calliper and increased ground clearance (Link Here).

While the new i20 is better than its predecessor, the increase ground clearance on the i20 Cross is going to test Hyundai engineers on suspension, ride and handling given that historically they have not been the best at these aspects.

IAB reports confirmed launch of Elite i20 Cross early 2015.

The Hyundai Elite i20 based crossover, which has been spotted testing in the outskirts of Chennai several times, will launch early next year. The news was confirmed to The Hindu Business Line by Young Jin Ahn, Chief Coordinator, Sales & Marketing Division, Hyundai Motor India Limited.

I also have same thoughts, while Hyundai have done excellent job in looks, quality & equipment departments, what improvements they can bring in ride & handling department with increased GC needs to be seen.

If there is one body style that I hate most among cars then it is cross. And what is this cross fever? Mini SUVs aren't enough for them? Now they had to launch cross, which is nothing but a hatch raised an inch or two, a black cladding slapped all around and a spare wheel stuck at the back, and voila, you have a cross. Pathetic. I would much like to see Hyundai launch ix25 to take on expensive Duster/Terrano and ever-elusive Ecosport. And not some stupid cross.

Saw one being tested under heavy traffic conditions in chennai. Looks more like the i20 cross. Any guesses?

Car looks too similar to the elite i20, am not able to see much of a difference in terms of height.

Thanks,

Achyuth

Hello everyone!
Looks like Hyundai's close to launch the Elite i20 Cross and the ix25.
The 2 cars have lately been spotted testing again in Chennai. In sequence, as you all know, the first one is the Elite i20 Cross, the latter being the ix25.

It looks like Hyundai are not just going to position the i20 Cross as a single variant of the i20, but as a variant family. A Motor Vikatan reader, R. Saravanaraj, has snapped what appears to be a lower variant on test. It misses out on LED DRLs, projector headlamps, ORVM-mounted indicators, reverse camera & electro-chromic IRVM. It does seem to get rear parking sensors and 14" alloy wheels (instead of 16" ones) with 185/70R14 tyres. The ride height seems to have been raised by a bit over the regular i20:

Wow! many spottings. Hyundai must be vigorously testing the vehicles.
But, does these 'cross' variants have such a good market?

Yes of course blueeyed. They are testing this so much that I have doubts if there is some serious mechanical changes under the hoods.

Market for 'cross' variants is a very tricky question. If you see, the models which call themselves "Cross" or have derived themselves from existing hatchbacks have actually not done very well. e.g. Cross Polo, Etios Cross, Avventura. This is probably because they are basically mod-jobs on an already selling hatchback.

But Ecosport is also the Cross version of the fiesta hatchback but it has a very different design and projects itself as a Compact SUV and that is a huge success in India and even in some other markets. Wonder what Hyundai is gonna name this model as.

Hyundai i20 Cross to be launched on March 9, 2015.

Unlike the Etios and Polo Cross the i20 is expected to be differentiated from the regular Elite in its interiors too.
It will throw in a set of larger wheels on the range-topping model. Adding to the rugged styling is a set of chunky roof rails. It will be offered in different variants too.

I don't understand this fad of cross variants of hatchbacks. All the cross models launched so far have flopped miserably & deservingly so - Etios Cross, Polo Cross & Aventura. I don't know why Hyundai is bothered with a i20 Cross when it's already working on the Ix small SUV. Between the i20 Elite and ix SUV the cross will be in no man's land & will get lost and eaten up by these two models in sales.

While the Cross Polo and Avventura are only sold in India, atleast the India-spec version. But for Hyundai, the Indian factory would be the mother plant for this model, means it will be sold globally but built only in India. Such models do good in markets like South America etc. ACI says it will be built here and supplied globally.

Like the Micra, which Nissan sells more overseas than local, Hyundai may follow the same working for the i20 Cross. Yes and the ix25 will be positioned at more than Rs 2 lakh above the Cross, hence there will be a good price gap.

Ok, granted that this cross thing is for overseas markets. Why not launch ix25 first? As we speak, Dusters and Ecsoports are selling like hot cakes. Why not address this first? These cross-breeds can wait. And if you ask me, they can wait for ever. I just abhor them.

As far as I know, Hyundai hasnt introduced an RHD Diesel version of the ix25 SUV yet and that's maybe taking time for them to launch here, hence a longer testing phase.

Whereas the i20 Cross is an easy mod on the standard car and that could be the reason why its coming sooner.

I personally feel the ix25 would be priced a tad higher than the Duster/EcoSport/Terano segment going by the looks, the big alloys and the upmarket interiors seen in the pics.

In that case let it be a export model. I still feel the i20 cross will be lost between the Elite and ix25. Better to ignore the cross fad & keep the elite and ix25 models in the interests of simplicity of model line up.
