I guess that only time will tell whether this was a good move or not. But you are right, surplus cash must be made to work hard, and not enjoy itself in a bank vault. In a stable outlook scenario I wouldn't argue about this move - it is only in the context of what is happening in the auto industry as a whole.

I think they are moving away from their core area and dabbling with a "golden goose" seeing all this real estate industry flush with cash. Also, the regulatory environment around real estate is still quite loose and our laws are not strong enough to corral any misdeeds.

While financially it may make sense in the short term, I'd really hope they don't put this ahead of their cars business. No one is too big to fail - they all do by making really weird decisions. I somehow feel that this is one such thing.
