BMW updates the 520d, drops the 525d!

Thanks to D-BHPian akshay1234 for bringing this to our attention.

BMW have silently updated the 1,995cc diesel engine of the 520d making it more powerful than before. It now receives the same B47 engine which made its debut with the 2014 X3 facelift in India.

Power and torque figures now read at 188 BHP (vs 181 BHP) and 400 Nm (vs 380 Nm) respectively. This bump in power now results in a quicker 0-100 launch time of 7.7 seconds (vs 7.9 seconds). Due to the added performance, fuel efficiency figures have diminished slightly - while the outgoing 520d returned 18.48 km/l and emitted 144.47 g/km of CO2, this one returns 18.12 km/l and 146.11 g/km of CO2.

Another surprise is the silent discontinuation of the 525d from its line-up. The 525d was the model covering the wide price gap between the 520d and the 530d. However, starting January 2015, it doesn't appear on BMW's official price list. BMW's official website has not been updated, however, their official January 2015 spec sheet reveals the same.

The most important change to this new 20d engine is lower NVH levels compared to the older engine which was louder than Audi's 2.0 TDI engine.

The poor 525d continues to get step-motherly treatment from BMW. Throughout the E60's life, and for the initial lot of F10s, the 525d was powered by an inline-6.

End 2012, the 525d's engine moved from a 6-cylinder to a 4-cylinder (same as the 320 / 520). Sure, it had 218 horses, but you just can't beat the refinement & sound of an inline-6.

I won't be surprised if the 525d never returns. It was butchered by the 520d on one side, and the mighty 530d on the other. After losing its 2 cylinder advantage to the 520d, few would buy a 525.

Good news that 520d gets a better engine than the 3 series!

I hope that by removing 525d, Bmw doesn't plan to increase the price of 520d to 525d range!

The 3 series soon will get the new B47 engine as well. Due to poorer insulation in the 3 series the old engine was quite noisy, especially when pushed.

The price will always increase, car prices have simply gone through the roof in the last couple of years. I would not be surprised if taxes are increased once more, whether on fuel, tolls or toll subsitute VAT or otherwise. I don't see any relief for us car lovers, we are easy to tax and politically also correct for the govt. to do so.

We are one of those taxpayers in the world who dont want to pay taxes. Mere 4% Of us pay taxes. But when it comes to crying foul, we are always ready. Govt. expenses are 'x' and its income is 'y', Now there has to be some way govt. Would try to lessen the difference.

If most of us paid our taxes, we would definitely be better off and the govt. Would lessen the excise on car. Even then, the nature would be the reason to tax cars (diesel particularly).

Manufacturers like BMW should invest in electric engines. Also, the roof can be used to charge vehicle using solar panels. Imagine whole Vehicle roof is a big solar panel. People would love to park their cars in sun then and travel to and fro for free!
I personally would love to own such a car if i could pay for it.

Also worth noting is that the 520d prestige (base model) now has adaptive LED headlamps as standard (compared to xenon earlier).

Re: BMW updates the 520d, drops the 525d!

In progressive cities like LA, home owners buy solar/wind arrays for around 10 Lacs, install them on their homes and then purchase cars like the Tesla and the BMW i3 to utilize the energy their newly installed grids generate. They use this energy to drive in their daily lives, using gasoline only for long distance trips.

The solar array then feeds excess energy back into the city smart grid, allowing for electricity credits on the household electric bill.

While the upfront cost is significant, subsidies on the grid, charger and car help. There is no greater peace of mind than never having to fill up gas or pay full price for electricity again.

I dream of this future for India. Maybe someday when I am an old man?
