A decade with the Maruti Swift - 13 lakh sales up!

The Maruti Suzuki Swift has crossed the 13 lakh cumulative sales mark. The car has achieved this milestone in less than ten years. It was launched in May 2005, and has been the best-selling car in its segment.

The Swift is sold as 5-door hatchback in India. The car is powered by a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that produces 84 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 115 Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm. The car is also available with a 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder diesel power plant that develops 74 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm of torque @ 2,000 rpm. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Indeed, this is a great achievement by Maruti, and aptly it is celebrating it as well. While saying so, SWIFT now needs a real makeover to continue to keep the sales register clicking. The outer design hasn't changed too much in 10 years. Hope Maruti is listening.

Wow! That is more than 350 cars per day or 14 cars per hour. That must be a dream figure for any car manufacturer in India.

Congratulations Maruti, now is the right time to bring out some revolutionary changes in terms of performance, technology and safety.

Re: A decade with the Maruti Swift - 13 lakh sales up!

IMO a company like Maruti, with a rich rally heritage and which actively promotes motorsports in India, must bring in the performance avatar of the Swift. I mean seriously, what do they have to lose? Their sales will any ways go northwards and if anything, this car will only add to the brand's appeal and desirability. Also, it is not like they have to develop an all new car or anything, they already have the highly acclaimed Swift Sport in the international markets, right?

Come on Maruti, if Volkswagen can bring in a GT TSI and GT TDI and drive sales of its 'old' hatchback, with the reputation and a widespread network which Maruti enjoys in India, the Swift Sport will be nothing but a success...

Re: A decade with the Maruti Swift - 13 lakh sales up!

I am happy to be a part of the 13L customers who made it possible for Maruti Suzuki to hit this milestone.

Jokes apart, its high time Maruti now get the Performance in the picture. Use the 1.3L VGT engine as an option in all variants and 1.6L MJD as an engine option may be for the 'Z' variant.

Enough of milking the 1.3L FGT DDiS engine from 2007, 8 years since launch and the public in India is never tired of this engine.

Maruti must learn from Tata, the changeover from Vista to Bolt is brilliant and highly commendable. Same needs to come from Maruti in terms of Space, Quality, engine options and Fit/finish.

High time they up the game!

Re: A decade with the Maruti Swift - 13 lakh sales up!

The Swift's launch in 2005 also marks a turning point for Maruti - their 'second coming' if you will.

It's in the last decade that we've seen a beast that's different from the old, slow Maruti selling an old range of cars. The slew of new car launches, 1.3L diesel, AMT, absolute focus on customer service etc. only began in 2005. From having the attitude of an overweight 50 year old, Maruti trimmed itself & became an athletic 30 year old.

Congratulations to the Swift! An iconic car that appeals to the commuter as well as enthusiast.

The swift diesel totally changed the way the car sold. Before the diesel was launched, the petrol version was being sold at huge discounts of up to 50k. I know someone who bought it at that time. With the launch of the diesel, waiting times shot up and discounts ended.
The first minor version was launched in 2008, not 2010 as mentioned.

Re: A decade with the Maruti Swift - 13 lakh sales up!

Glad to be part of this legacy. I remember when we got our Swift Diesel in 2008, such vicious turbo kick was something which was unheard of. I remember during the rainy season of 2009 when the turbo spooled in 2nd gear even at 30 to 40 kmph, the front wheel spun. What joy.

Maruti has made a legacy which every manufacturer out in India is trying to beat and the I 20 has come close to that over the years.

India does come home in a Maruti.

Am happy that my first car was Swift. In fact I learnt driving in Swift. It has taken me to many places across South India, Goa and Maharashtra. Today I remain alive to write this is because of almighty and Swift. It took the whole brunt and all of us came out unscathed. No injuries to anyone.

Re: A decade with the Maruti Swift - 13 lakh sales up!

My father bought the Swift in June 2005 and was one of the first few Lxi's to be sold in Bangalore.

It has remained stock till date apart from adding the central lock system from Nippon . It hasn't seen much running and has clocked less than 50k kms till date.

It was recently given for a full service and the only parts that were replaced were the link rods ,bushes and the boot struts.

It is pathetic on mileage and refinement , but that 1.3 engine is enjoyable .

Spot-on. Good observation. This was a very minor refresh given to the Swift in 2008.

Also, in the interiors, the amber colour speedo console changed to the bluish tinge one.

Refer to the image for the 2008 speedo console:
