Honda small car - Another bestseller coming soon ?

Honda to introduce its small car in India

NEW DELHI: Honda Motors on Thursday said it was looking at bringing in a small car in the Indian market for expanding its product portfolio.

"We are looking at a small car for introducing in the Indian market," Honda Siel India president and CEO M Takedagawa said on the sidelines of SIAM summit.

He appreciated the government's move to cut excise duty on small cars by 8 per cent

Honda expects sales in India at 62,000 units this fiscal against 43,000 in 2005-06. Of this, 40,000 are expected of 'Honda City', 16,000 of 'Civic', and 3,000 each of 'CRV' and 'Accord', Takedagawa said.

Guess Hyundai would be hurt the most when Honda launches small car. Maruti has its loyal fans but I would wager that Getz will become history if Honda launches small car.

The only small car honda has is its JAZZ/FIT, and that wud definately be pricey., in the Getz range. not even in the swifts range. But its quiet spacious and nice, and keeping in mind the Brand, think ppl will dig for it!

Jazz is a car thats sold at close to the price of City and not Getz worldwide. So, it may be a competition to Chevy SR-V.

Infractions: 0/1 (10)

if they can meet the excise cut standards by keeping the engine capacity below 1.2ltr and length upto 4m,they can probably reduce the price even more and get it close 5.5lacs,it would sell like hot cakes.not to mention that the jazz/fit shares a lot of its components with the city, localisation wont be a problem.

There is a 1.2 liter IDSI Jazz for some markets. But it wont be cheap. My guess around 6 lakhs. There is not much else to strip.

Now they also have a bunch of K cars with 660 cc engines.

Ha ha! Is Chevy SRV still selling? I thought its died the same day it was launched. Anyways, Jazz would be in B++ segment, I guess. If Skoda manages to launch Fabia in India, these two car may compete with each other.

jazz has the capacity of pushing of the fusion , SRV , fabia... maybe ... out of the competition... its fun to drive ... the jazz in markets such as south africa is really steamy it seems... the NDTV car and bike show scooped jazz for a ride

i do not think Honda will bring in the jazz as their entry level car. they would have done that ages back but they realized that it won't be able to compete at the price point required for a successful small car here.

uhuh... it will have to be a new car designed for these markets... that is if it ever happens. Honda has been sounding out the market for years now. in fact Toyota has done a better thing. they recently acknowledged that it is not possible to launch a car with their minimum quality standards at such low prices as prevalent here. Hence no small cars from them... at least not yet.

Honda's small car will probably be in the super-mini segment like Maruri Swift/Hyundai Getz. It could be the hatchback version of Honda City - Jaz/Fit. They could leverage their existing plant infrastructure to competitively price it, albeit with a premium.
I feel unless Toyota or VW steps into this segment with Yaris hatchback & Golf respectively, Honda could really enjoy a significant price premium on their offering.

Taking too long to decide!

I've been reading reports about Honda "closely looking at the small car segment in India" for a few years now. In Jan this year, ACI said that the Jazz could be on offer by the end 2006!! I even had a mail exchange with ACI about this. My question was whether Honda can manage to meet demands of NHC ZX, launch Civic on time and still launch Jazz by end 2006. And ACI seemed quite sure then.

And now here's the latest from ACI about the Jazz -

http://www.autocarindia.com/new/Information.asp?id=1502

It is a good car to look forward to, but I personally can't wait till 2008 ...

One reason this car can do very well in India! It can steam roll competition when it comes to space.

Check out this cool ad:

BTW did anyone see the CAR&BIKE show on NDTV last week(Sept 16)? I missed it. I heard it featured the Honda Jazz. Any guesses they made about the launch date?
