Ola ties up with Nissan for taxi supply

Web-based taxi aggregator Ola has tied up with Nissan. The partnership will see Ola purchasing cars from Nissan as well as Datsun.

Under the cab-leasing program, drivers can lease a car for a minimal initial deposit and monthly lease rentals that also include routine maintenance of the vehicle.

The drivers are not required to seek a loan or financing either. In a period of 3 years, they can become the owners of the vehicles.

Ola is looking to form more such partnerships with other manufacturers. The company plans to add more than 1,00,000 vehicles to its fleet through its cab-leasing unit by end of 2016.

Earlier this year, we had reported that carmakers have started positioning more of their models in the fleet segment (click here to read report). Aggregators such as Ola and Uber have triggered a rise in demand for cars in the fleet segment. This has led to manufacturers turning to the segment to try and increase the sales of some of their slow moving models. Nissan too seems to have joined the bandwagon.

Re: Ola ties up with Nissan for taxi supply

Nissan's sales are so poor that they'll tie up with just about anybody . When big daddy Ola comes on the negotiating table, you can bet that big discounts were rolled out.

The Sunny does make for a heck of a taxi. Reliable, fuel-efficient, soft ride quality, spacious back seat and huge boot.

But it's overpriced now. The base Sunny diesel costs 10 lakhs in Mumbai (on the road). The discounts had better be f-a-t to lure taxi owners, else there are a lot more options in the market.

Good strategy. Will help dealers move stocks, factory push despatches and sales to meet their targets (hopefully).
And the product will lend itself well to the fleet segment.

The Sunny is spacious, (w.r.t. cabin volume and boot volume), fuel thrifty in its diesel guise and the reliability of the K9K powertrain is proven.
It can actually be a hit with the cabbies, especially the old Indigo owning cab drivers looking for a replacement.

Nissan has to manage the brand well though. Otherwise we will be looking at another "Indica/Indigo Cab - branded - image" syndrome repetition. Unfortunately in our country the Nissan brand equity is not much to rave about, although fundamentally the products are sound.

Am sure GM and Fiat will be fighting for a similar share of the pie!

This may be OT but this technically changes the fundamental concept of what Ola is, correct? They're no longer just a platform where people who want a ride can find drivers.

Good for Nissan, though; esp, the bit about maintenance being covered. The quality of cars has been a major reason why I almost always choose Uber over Ola.
