re: BS6 / BSVI emission norms coming in April 2020! EDIT: BS6 Phase II coming in April 2023

I'm planning to purchase a new diesel car.

What will be impact of BSVI fuel in BSIV diesel car post 1st April 2020 since BSVI will be available all across country?

BS-VI is coming to the NCR region from 2018 itself and there was some talk in local news channels of Bangalore also getting it around the same time

As per article the injectors will go bad due to less lubrication because of lesser Sulphur content.

Does that mean all Diesel cars BSIV and prior in India post April 2020 going to be having considerable maintenance cost with replacement of injectors?

It is a long term problem, as was the case of valve seats of petrol engines getting damaged when Unleaded was introduced. In the west due to a higher compression the problem was worse. It will be an issue only slowly developing.

Toyota 2.8 lt 1FTV-GD engine in Fortuner and BMW 2.0 lt B47 engine in X1 are both compliant with Euro 6 emission norms.

Will they still face issue with BSVI fuel?

Just like when Vento 1.6 TDi was launched in 2010 with BSIV norms. It ran perfectly with BSIII fuel until nationwide availability in April 2017.

Don't want to purchase a new car which after 2 years will be troublesome and lose considerable resale value. Kindly advise.

As on date the 2.8 1GD-FTV or 2.4 2GD-FTV vehicles sold in India are not BS6 (Euro6) compliant since these do not have DPF or SCR. Same engines sold in other developed countries are Euro6 compliant and they come with DPF and SCR emission control systems.

So what happens if I buy an Crysta today. Will I be asked to make modifications post 2020 to have DPF & SCR installed. I understand from the various posts that the BS4 engine will run perfectly fine with BS6 fuel. Hopefully I wont have to make any modifications to the engine either.

On the other hand, a slightly naive question that perhaps has been asked and answered - between petrol & diesel BS4 engines which has the the least impact cause of this change in fuel standards?

re: BS6 / BSVI emission norms coming in April 2020! EDIT: BS6 Phase II coming in April 2023

The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has set up virtual labs for testing of BS-VI engines, before the norms kick in from April 1st, 2018 in Delhi and from April 1st, 2020 for the rest of India.

Quote:
"The calibration centre is capable of undertaking up to 60% of the calibration process of engine virtually with 80% accuracy," ARAI said in a statement.

“To make the process faster, a certain amount of calibration can be done through simulation. The benefits of this centre will include the saving of time and cost, and without CO2 emission,” the research agency said.

N V Marathe, the deputy director of ARAI, said the virtual centre can be used to test not only automotive internal combustion engines but also engines of other applications.

On Wednesday, the ARAI also unveiled the environment research laboratory that will be equipped to collect, measure and analyse tailpipe emissions from the vehicles.

April 1st, 2018 is only a month away & we haven't yet heard of any engines upgraded to BS-VI (except for a few high end cars). Lets hope that this deadline is not postponed, as Delhi is a market where every manufacturer would like to sale all of its models.

I believe we have a thread that the Fiat Multijet 1.3L will not be upgraded to BS-VI, even today all Maruti Diesel cars are powered by this engine. By 2020 their own BS-VI diesel engine might be ready, but surely not by next month. Even petrol cars like Maruti Alto, Omni are powered by the age old F series engine (which is from the 80s).

So, interesting times are ahead as to how the things will unfold in April, 2018. Will the Manufacturers be able to upgrade the engines in time? Or will some models be discontinued in Delhi? Or will the deadline be postponed?

The deadline is April 2020 for all India including Delhi. It's just some manufacturers will start selling BSVI compliant engines and oil companies will make available the BSVI compliant fuel from April 2018 in Delhi. This is what I understood from the article.

re: BS6 / BSVI emission norms coming in April 2020! EDIT: BS6 Phase II coming in April 2023

Delhi becomes the first Indian city to run on BS-VI fuels, as per a report by ET Auto.

Quote:
If you live in Delhi, you may have felt your car engine running a tad more smoothly of late. The reason is that, unknown to motorists, Delhi has already switched to Bharat Stage-VI (BS-VI) fuels, ahead of the scheduled April 1 launch for the capital.

State-run fuel retailers have been pushing cleaner petrol and diesel — similar to, but not exactly the same, as EuroVI fuels — since February to flush supply pipelines and tanks at petrol pumps. Almost all the 397 petrol pumps in the capital are selling BS-VI fuels.

Oil company executives claimed that BS-VI fuels will have “better” emission than vehicles running on CNG. But auto experts said introducing BS-VI fuels without the vehicles tuned for such fuels will only yield partial benefit since these will be used by vehicles with BS-IV or BSIII engines plying on Delhi’s roads.

"BS-IV diesel has 50 ppm (parts per million) sulphur, while BS-VI will have 10 ppm. So, using BS-VI fuel in BS-IV engines will not hurt performance but will also not give you the full benefit,” an engineer working with an auto company said requesting anonymity.

Today the OMCs have released the information that about 25 cities may be Euro VI fuels next year. This is a year ahead of schedule.

Good news and now the OEMs can't cite uncertainties towards launching BS6 compliant vehicles.

So is this BS6 petrol in Delhi also RON 95? Or would it continue to be RON 91?
