Re: BMW imports large consignment of Petrol 3 & 5 Series

Slightly off topic, but since the discussion is on return of petrol BMW's I would like to know if a 520i can be either remapped or have a tuning box to bump up the power to the figure of 528i (from approx 184 hp to 254 hp)
Looks like there are number tuners in net providing this power bump up (although may be more realistic increase upto 235 hp)
Now when i compared the engine details on bmw site of 520i and 528i the only difference i could find was the compression ratio. All other parameters remained identical. Probably the piston, etc are different in the 2 cars.
So question is has any forum member updated for mapping for stock 520i similar to 528i?
Also members having idea on this aspect, please share as it will help people to chose 520i and later upgrade the power output.
I am not sure if just a remap / tuning box is sufficient or lot of parts also need to be modified to cope with the extra power in modified 520i

As I mentioned earlier the N20 engine is identical in the 520i and 528i barring the pistons and software. If you want to be absolutely sure, replace the pistons and then remap. Otherwise most folks are doing just a straight remap to 245HP. The nice thing is that since this car is a CBU, you can expect also expect a better suspension than the wallowy crap you get in the CKD 320d.

3 Series Petrol Launched & 5 Series Petrol Launch around the corner

The latest import data suggests that BMW has imported petrol powered units of the 3 Series and 5 Series sedan in India and the Bavaria based giant has officially launched the petrol variants of the 3 Series with prices starting at 36.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). BMW did surprise us by launching the 2016 3-Series facelift in the country earlier this year, but it had also discontinued the petrol variants of the model since last year. However, the company now wants to rebuild its petrol range of models, keeping up with the market demand. The 320i Prestige variant starts at 36.9 lakh, while prices for the Luxury line start at 42.70 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Re: BMW imports large consignment of Petrol 3 & 5 Series

Great move by BMW but would have liked it if they launched the 328i instead.

But from what I've reading it has great tuning potential so maybe petrolheads will probably prefer it to the XE?

Re: BMW imports large consignment of Petrol 3 & 5 Series

They have got another lot of 5 series

If we see Assessable value of these cars and compare with List Price for other CBU Models from BMW in Indian market - some should seriously

520 - List Price about 50-54 Lac , Assesable Value - 19 Lac

Z4 - List Price - 78 Lac , Assesable Value - 21 Lac

750 - List Price - 1,55 Cr + Options , Assesable Value - 40 Lac

If BMW India had to burn the money , why on 500 numbers of 3 & 5 series ?

can't they have subsidised all other CBU instead, all of such would have been pre-booked unlike 5 or 3 Petrol where they might actually end up giving discounts on such costly Imports given the competition in this segment.

I don't think any strategy can justify such a big loss.

Re: BMW imports large consignment of Petrol 3 & 5 Series

Dropped in at BMW Navnit this morning to check out the 320i. No display car, and no TD car for now and the foreseeable future since they sell about 1 a month and most are aimed at Delhi. The MRP for the Prestige is 47L on-road which was negotiated down to 41L without really trying. So I assume you can get a much bigger discount if you really try, but will have to buy it blind without a TD !!!

There is a huge discount on Diesel 3 series too(I was offered almost Rs. 7.5 Lac discount after hard negotiations) .

Re: BMW imports large consignment of Petrol 3 & 5 Series

BMW have also imported 48 CKD kits of F30 320IA on 10-Jun-2016 at an assessable value of INR 1011,757 each.

What ever slight loss they are making on selling a CBU 320i with high discounts will be covered elsewhere - selling CKD at profit, Service, BSI etc.

German trios are also competing hard for a higher market share. I believe GST might eventually reduce price of these premium cars by 3 to 5% (if manufacturer passes on benefit to customer) as new tax on CKD assembled cars could come down by 5% compared to current Excise duty and VAT structure.

Diesel ban never affected BMW 3 and 5 series IMO because engine capacity was <2000 CC. Petrol 320i already has discounts in range of 6 to 9 Lacs.

The public mindset that such a policy decision of such magnitude can be taken in a fortnight made them refrain from diesel car buying as a whole, even the sub 2000cc ones.

Re: BMW imports large consignment of Petrol 3 & 5 Series

Does anybody know exactly how many F10 520i's came to India in 2016 as CBU imports? Been on the lookout for one since a LONG time now, haven't had much success.

I would not recommend getting the 520i unless you aim to tune the car. In stock form, the 184hp and 270nm torque of the motor feels quite dull for a car that heavy. When tuned however, the car should be quite a delight.

I don't have much info with regards to import quantities but they had quite some struggle selling the 520i considering the torque of the 520d better suits the vehicle's overall characteristics.
