This nomenclature is standard BMW policy, not just for the 7 series. The 2 liter diesel is badged 4 different ways depending on power output as in the 3 series. 316d(116hp), 318d (150hp), 320d (190hp) and 325d (215hp). It's only in the US market where they badge the 320d as 328d with no power changes to try and fool people into going for the diesel.

On an environmental aspect, I'm sure the smaller engines running on a higher level of tune are more polluting than the bigger engines.

So, congrats to NGT for implementing a rule which is now, more polluting than before, and also increasing the overall carbon footprint.

Yes, the 320d has an CO2 emission level of 113 g/km whereas the 325d has a much higher emission level of 129 g/km.

In comparison the 330d with a 6 cylinder engine has an emission level of 131 g/km (increase of just 2 gm) despite a much bigger engine.

Of course, the same engines in the 5 and 7 will have even higher emission levels.

I think BMW can use this variant with a basic kit to counter Long wheelbase E-Class as and when Mercedes launches this for Right Hand Market which probably should happen soon. Coming to discussions on power , I think it will be adequate, specially for duties within city limits or even highways when you are being chauffeured around. Remember there is a large segment with a demand to have a spacious rear seat.

As long as we let the courts take administrative decisions such anachronisms will only multiply. We are locked out from the cars with the lowest pollution levels, ie Mercedes Blue. I think the only cars with a lower pollution than that are the Tesla's.
