2017 Volvo XC90 D5 and D5 R-Design imported for homologation

Following the XC90 T8 Twin Engine, Volvo has now also brought in 2017 XC90 models for homologation indicating a simultaneous launch. Single unit of D5 and D5 R-design variants have been imported.

2017 XC90 D5 is mostly a tech and engine update. Powered by the new 2.0L PowerPulse Diesel engine which is identical to the existing engine but with an added compressor and air-tank. They are used to force compressed air into the turbocharger in order to bring down turbo lag and boost power. Engine churns out 235 BHP @ 4000 RPM and peak torque of 480 Nm @ 1750 - 2250 RPM, an improvement of 10 BHP and 10Nm over existing powertrain.

As for tech, XC90 is now equipped with 'Pilot Assist II', the semi-autonomous driving system capable of driving car upto speeds of 130 km/h on well-marked highways with limited driver input. Other features include Run-off Road Mitigation System, Animal Detection etc.

R-design trim gets styling cues such as matt-silver ORVM, gloss black grille, sportier front bumper, 20'' alloys, R-design branded leather seats etc.

What is more interesting than the R design is that the 407bhp hybrid is being homologated too. That will surely add the muscle which the 2.0 litre diesel is missing!

Volvo XC90 R7 imported into India, launch soon

Thank you to the Team-BHP fan (he prefers to remain anonymous) who sent this information in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts!

Volvo has imported multiple units of the XC90 R7 variant into India. The same model was imported a month back for homologation purposes. Hence, these recent import points towards the company's plans to launch the variant in the near future.

The 'R' in the nomenclature of the XC90 R7 refers to the car being an R-Design version. Thus, the new variant will get various cosmetic changes like a gloss black finish on the front grille, matte silver ORVMs, a redesigned front bumper, 20-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels, and a larger rear spoiler. The interiors get Nappa leather seats with R-Design branding, and a darker headliner. Carbon fibre inserts detail the centre console and the gear level area.

Powering the new Volvo XC90 R7 is the same 2.0-litre diesel engine that does duty in the existing model range. But, the power mill has an added compressor and air-tank that is used to force compressed air into the turbocharger in order for it spool instantly. This helps in reducing turbo lag and enhancing the car's pulling power. The engine develops 225 BHP.

The new variant is also expected to come with Volvo's 'Pilot Assist II' system that is capable of driving the XC90 at speeds of up to 130 km/h on the highways, with minimal driver inputs. It is also likely to get features like Run-off Road Mitigation System and Animal Detection system.

Frankly for a big 7 Seater, I don't think 2.0 Liter engine will make the cut, except ofcourse with the electric boost.

If you see most reviews, the 2 liter despite large output numbers on paper, struggles after a point. I can't only imagine taking of with this 2.0 liter engine with a fully loaded car on a steep incline. For full size 7 seater SUVs, I think 3.0 should be the absolute minimum if you want solid performance.

Agree but this particular car is pretty good for city use or normal highway cruising though it sounds like a juicer. Things should get interesting when they get hybrid here, maybe they have more demand elsewhere so this delay.
