India becomes the 5th largest car maker in the world

2016.. (6 years after the start of this thread!)

India becomes the 5th largest car maker in the world-oemname1.jpg

Other countries ahead of India in the charts include Germany, Japan, the USA and China.

India is likely to retain this trend all through 2016 as reports indicate there is a slump in the auto industry( S Korea) that has led to dramatic fall in both domestic and export numbers.

Quote:
On the other hand, the Indian automobile market has witnessed steady growth, contributing to almost seven per cent of the country’s economy. The Make in India scheme has also given a boost to manufacturing in the country, with an aim to increase the output by many folds and providing employment to an additional 2.5 crore people by the end of this year

Definitely a big deal. I hope the automakers will also start viewing our domestic buyers with as much respect as they have for the buyers of the other major markets and we start getting newer models, better technologies and so on.
I think the title of this thread needs to be corrected too.

India Becomes 5th largest Car Maker in the World

India becomes the 5th largest car maker in the world beating South Korea. In between January and July 2016, India has produced 2.57 million cars. In the same period, South Korea produced 2.55 million cars, reveals the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA). India is one of the fastest growing car markets across the globe. In recent past auto industry in the country has seen a rapid growth, and this comes due to the increasing demand. Also the country is at the forefront, in terms of exporting as well.

re: India becomes the 5th largest car maker in the world

So, if I understand this right, India is the 5th largest in terms of total cars produced in the country; be it for the domestic or the export market.

I'd be curious to know what amount of cars produced in the country get exported.

While this feat is commendable, considering the amount of jobs and money it produces for the economy, the number of new vehicles it puts on the roads is alarmingly staggering.

We should ideally have a plan in place to manage all those vehicles: be it parking or roads!

Going by this article, we export about 20% of the total vehicles produced:

Just goes to emphasise the need for better infrastructure to support this huge spurt in new vehicles hitting the roads.

India becomes fifth largest car manufacturer in the world

India has surpassed South Korea to become the fifth largest car manufacturing nation in the world. It now trails countries like Germany, Japan, USA and China. India produced 25.7 lakh cars from January - June 2016, while South Korea manufactured 25.2 lakh units during the same period.

Last year, South Korea produced 45.5 lakh cars, as compared to India's manufacturing log of 41.2 lakh. However, from the past one year, the South Korean automotive industry is facing labour unrest and a demand slump. Workers of the Hyundai-Kia group have gone on a long strike, demanding an increase in their wages. This has adversely hit production of Korea's biggest auto company. Moreover, increasing taxes on car purchases have kept customers at bay, thus negatively affecting local demand.

However, the Indian automotive market is witnessing a steady growth rate. With the 7th pay commission, automakers are expecting a surge in demand over the next year. Exports from the country too have seen a growing curve, under the Government's Make in India campaign.

As a result, India is expected to hold on to its 5th position for a longer time. Meanwhile, South Korea might also be overtaken by Mexico in the near future, as Kia has set up production plants there in order to avoid losses due to Korea's labour unrest.

World's largest Auto Producer,

India becomes the 5th largest car maker in the world-capture.jpg

Quote:
China really build 24 million of the 72m cars made last year? If true, this means the Chinese churned out millions more than second-place Japan (7.9m), Germany (5.7m), the US (3.9m) and South Korea (3.9m) combined. Unbelievable ?
Quote:
India (3.7m) is the next big thing, and is poised to overtake Korea, the US and then even Germany, thereby creating an Asian lock-out in the global Top 3 by 2020.
Quote:
But Spain and Mexico, producing 2.4m and 2m cars respectively, are other rising stars, while Brazil (1.8m) isn’t doing bad in ninth place. After a whirlwind 2016, Britain clung to its impressive position as 10th largest producer with 1.7m cars.

Re: India becomes the 5th largest car maker in the world

India trumps Germany, UK to become the fourth largest auto market in the world. On the way to becoming the third largest in this segment.

Forbes on India becoming the 3rd largest consumer economy :

Quote:
In less than a decade, the world's widget makers, entertainers, and beauty products will be focused on three core economies: the United States and China, of course, and in third place and gaining fast: India. They're young. They're the poorest of the big emerging markets, so have lots of momentum on their side. And they're tech savvy smart. India is the new China. If you have something to sell, India is now an on-radar must.

India sold more automobiles than Brazil and South Korea put together beating even Germany and the UK to emerge as the world’s fourth largest vehicle market.

Quote:
The country clocked total sales of 1.64 million units during January-May this year to clinch the fourth spot beating European heavyweight Germany which saw sales of 1.60 million units during the same period.

China, US and Japan continue to dominate the top three spots, selling 11.18 million, 5.43 million and 2.30 million, respectively. China remained the biggest consumer of automobiles despite a slowing economy.

Yes, but India's population is 20 times that of UK. However number of cars sold are almost same in both countries. We need to factor in that, too. So, per capita cars is waaay high in UK. We need a lot of catching up to do with these countries in terms of car ownership.

Agree, that's why I simply don't bother with any article that pegs India as one of the leaders of anything.. India lacks the basics of everything, EVERYTHING. One thing is sure, I hope India never catches up with U.S or Europe in either car ownership or manufacturing.. if anything sales should go down in my view.

Poor roads.. check, poor infrastructure.. check, poor driving skills.. triple check.
