Volvo India issues newspaper notice on Big Boy Toyz - What gives?

Guys,

What's the history behind this? AFAIK, BBT has never claimed to be a Volvo dealer. Why has Volvo released this notice in the papers (source = Moderator Moralfibre)?

BBT sells a lot of unregistered cars as well and under their parent company, Magus Cars Pvt Ltd., they privately import all sorts of cars too. So I am guessing it is in relation to the same maybe?

Many brand new private imports, including Volvo's, are sold by BBT afaik.

So this could be one such instance where Volvo is not involved in any form, neither sales nor support.

Technically, Volvo should honour warranties globally but this would not be the case

This reminds me, Apple does not do this either. An iPhone bought/imported from outside India will not be repaired under warranty in India even if it is 5 days old, unless one buys extended warranty.

Re: Big Boy Toyz opens new showroom in Gurgaon

BBT might as well sell those 3 XC90's for dirt cheap. However with Volvo coming out and saying that they won't honor any warranties, I doubt anyone would spend a substantial chunk of the 3 cars mentioned. One just wouldn't be able to get the trust factor. That said would Volvo service the cars? I am guessing they would refuse to do the same?

Edit: Just realized that in Delhi you could get a XC90 Momentum (new) for 80 on road.

They have listed as old but are sold out now

By photo's these did appear brand new, though. There must be some story behind all these low prices & Volvo notice.

Considering the low volume, any dealer would be a fool not to profit from servicing whatever came his way

It might have been ordered for some other market and diverted to India.

Re: Big Boy Toyz opens new showroom in Gurgaon

An insider told that they had got a big stock of brand new un-registered Volvo XC90's from a dealer in south. So that's how they are selling all these Volvos. Many people have bought these and that's why VOLVO ended up publishing this disclaimer.

Thanks for offering more clarity, team! Moving it into a new thread as any prospective Volvo owner from Delhi / Gurgaon needs to know about this.

A link to the earlier thread.

Re: Volvo India issues newspaper notice on Big Boy Toyz - What gives?

I believe it all boils down to the warranty expectations of the buyers of these cars.

It is in Volvo's interest to put out that disclaimer, so that the buyers of these cars do not end up at their doorstep claiming warranties some time down the line.

PS: Maybe someone who might have bought one of these, already rang the bell at Volvo's door claiming warranty and hence they felt the need.

Have they?
"Volvo cannot guarantee the genuineness of the cars (or any parts thereof) from Big Boy Toyz Pvt Ltd."

The way I see it, Volvo is saying that people should not consider these cars as new with original parts, and the standard warranties from the day of purchase will not be valid.

Let's say someone buys the car and takes it to the service center for a part replacement, won't a company like Volvo have all sorts of machinery to find whether the part is original and covered under warranty or not? Why should this be different from someone buying a pre-owned luxury car which is still under warranty?

Can these be from flood damaged lot, I understand Volvo showroom in chennai was flooded completely, BBT might have picked from Insurance company and then tried to sell as new?

Re: Volvo India issues newspaper notice on Big Boy Toyz - What gives?

I have another perspective on this whole issue. There is no doubt that these cars look new, though advertised as used. Heck, 2000+ kilometers driven is new by any measure. Now, if such a car has no illegal history attached to it and still ends up costing sizably less than what the manufacturer is selling it for then it also draws up some very interesting inferences about the kind of margin the manufacturer has put up. If so then it should not be a surprise that the manufacturer will try to discredit such an importer to preserve its turf.

That should not be very difficult to find out. Remember, that should make these cars more than a year old. Also, the upholstery etc with their new wrap and barcode etc should not have stayed in pristine condition after remaining submerged for a few days in the murky water. And if the suggestion is that BBT would have got these repaired then the question is that can you extensively repair such imported cars, which are CBUs, without leaving any traces of the troubled past and still sell for such low prices? It should have shot up beyond the price of a new car IMHO.
