2017 Toyota Prius launched in India at Rs. 38.96 lakh

Toyota has launched the fourth-gen Prius hybrid in India at a price of Rs. 38,96,040 (ex-showroom, Delhi). In India, the Prius will be available only in the top-end Z8 trim level and will be brought into the country through the CBU route.

Powering the new Prius Hybrid is a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine that works in tandem with an electric motor. The combined power output of the system is 120 BHP, while the hybrid powertrain has a company-claimed fuel economy figure of 26.27 km/l.

Based on the TNGA (Toyota New Generation Architecture) platform, the fourth-gen Prius gets sharper design cues. The front fascia is characterised by edgy headlamps and fog lights, both of which get LED illumination. The side profile continues to feature a sloping roofline, while the rear gets vertically oriented LED taillights.

Features on offer with the new Prius include leather upholstery, heated front seats, heads-up display and dual-zone climate control. Infotainment duties are handled by a touchscreen system mated to a 10-speaker JBL audio setup. Safety features include seven airbags, ABS, stability control and traction control.

Atrocious pricing to say the least! I mean, whey even the efforts Toyota? Instead of working on a Ciaz rival and compact SUV, they've come up with this. I'll be surprised if they cross 200 mark during its complete life cycle in India.

For a 12-15 lac car these beasts are charging double and triple!

It's a CBU. So more than half of the price is attributed to taxes.

But is it really a 12 lakh car? I mean, that's City territory, but won't the hybrid tech make Prius more expensive?

In the US, even the base variant of the Prius is priced above the Camry. Camry starts around $24k and Prius $25k. Corolla starts around $18k (12 lakh rupees).

Re: 2017 Toyota Prius launched in India at Rs. 38.96 lakh

I don't know why Toyota hasn't learnt from the success of the Camry Hybrid. I know that the Innova and Fortuner are priority, but setting up a line to assemble the Prius should have been priority. They could have even delayed the launch, set up assembly and priced the Prius at about ~20 lakhs- I'm sure there'll be a lot of takers then.

So a car that's a segment below Camry is actually more expensive in India?

The Prius is comparable to a corolla. It can be thought of as a Corolla + hybrid powertrain.

Doesn't Federal Tax grant make the effective price lesser ?

Also the other hybrid available in the market, the Accord, is priced at 37L ex showroom.

In comparison, Prius is a more unique proposition at just 2L more!

So it's pretty much priced at that range right? If we deduct the taxes that our government impose?

I do agree that all CBUs launched like this as showroom candy don't make any market sense though!

This variant costs about 30,000 USD without any Taxes. More than Toyota being greedy, our Government needs to think seriously for this segment. They should lower duties for Hybrid imports for the companies which promise investments in this segment. With 200 % Duties and taxes, there is nothing much Toyota can do.

Yes, because Camry hybrid is assembled in India whereas Prius is CBU Import.

Re: 2017 Toyota Prius launched in India at Rs. 38.96 lakh

For a car that has "green" written all around or atleast had previously it i.e if you had only heard about it here and there from friends, the mileage it's giving is beyond underwhelming. I really don't care about the car as a buyer nor have I researched about it thoroughly but it's just puzzling that the mpg / kmpl is so low.

It seems, substantial tax grants are currently available only for plug-in hybrids and electric cars. Not sure if this Prius is a plug-in hybrid. Also, most of the tax credits are available in the form of reduction in payable income tax. I dont know if tax credits have any effect on MSRP.

Re: 2017 Toyota Prius launched in India at Rs. 38.96 lakh

Isn't the Prius (now) a pointless car really? When you have the Camry in Hybrid power-train already available, what is the point of this car then?

What is the USP of Prius in India? Atrocious pricing? Sure! Spot on then..
I can buy a Merc C Class for this money. In US, this is a 25k car, and the C Class a 40k car. In India, they cost the same.

I know, I Know. because Prius is a CBU. As a customer, I don't give damn if a car is CBU or not, as long as it offers good levels of quality.

R.I.P Prius.

Same as the Beetle, GTI, 500 Abarth etc. Just to showcase the technology and act as showroom eye candy for some time. In reality, they'll be hoping to convert customers interested in the Prius to purchase more mainstream products like the Camry hybrid.

It costs around 80,000 odd UAE Dirhams in Dubai which is near enough as a value prop.
Which comes to about 15 lacs. Hence the statement.

The Camry is also around the same price bracket in UAE. Naturally a very good market to buy cars and a even better one to buy fuel.

But the Camry Hybrid sells for 30 lakhs here in India. So, they are charging about 9 lakhs more for the 'extra street cred' of a known hybrid.
