SIAM asks government to ban 15-year old cars

Society of Indian Automobile Manufactures (SIAM) has asked the government to consider a ban on vehicles older than 15 years to curb pollution.

At SIAM’s 57th annual convention Vinod K Dasari, President of SIAM mentioned that the Indian automobile companies are doing their best to reduce pollution and are working towards moving to BS VI emission norms. He also urged the government to consider forming a national automotive board to increase the design capacity of manufacturers and indirectly help the Make in India cause.

According to the SIAM, car automobile makers are facing a tough time due to frequent policy changes. Currently, the auto industry contributes almost 50% of the nation's manufacturing output.

Transport Minister, Mr. Nitin Gadkari stated that the government will be bringing in second generation of Ethanol as an alternate fuel. Discouraging automobile manufacturers to make any more diesel-run vehicles, he said that diesel was adding to the huge import costs and pollution levels.

SIAM also launched a Vehicle Recall information page on which all automobile manufacturers of India will voluntarily publish data of specific vehicle recalls in the country.

In what capacity is SIAM asking the Govt to ban old vehicles?
Has it thought about thousands of people who are not in a financial position to buy a new car?
What about Classic vehicles and cars which are maintained to highest standards? Who will compensate these people?

Coming to the actual proposal, Is there any proper recycling, scrapage facilities and schemes/policies in India? NO
Has SIAM done anything to build these facilities? NO

Is the above statement, a dirty ploy to extract more sales from our market? Hell, YES.

Wow. How nice of SIAM to be so worried about the pollution levels in the country. And what a brilliant suggestion to ban cars older than 15 years. Oh and by the way, the automobile manufacturers will laugh their way to the banks when people are forced to junk their cars and buy new ones, is just a coincidence.

re: SIAM asks government to ban 15-year old cars

They couldn't have thought of a better ploy. Perhaps blaming everything on pollution and directly relating it to motorvehicles is in trend!
Have they tested and observed actual emissions of well maintained older vehicles and compared them to the not so well kept ones?
I doubt they even have any reply as to what measures would be taken to scrap such a huge amount of old vehicles running in our country if such a ridiculous act ever comes into action!

Hope this act never sees the light of the day!

Perhaps it will take another 15 years to pass such a law in India. And it will need at least 10 years to prepare the right atmospherics--logistics, political compulsions, administrative measures etc. Is SIAM so naive to totally disregard the issues people will suffer from. Or are they so myopic that they cannot see beyond bottom lines?

re: SIAM asks government to ban 15-year old cars

There is definitely a strong smell of ploy to extract more sales and obviously it is coming from Society of Indian Automobile Manufactures (SIAM).

The reason is pretty much LAME as well. Pollution really.
Why have manufacturers always pushed the Emission Norms deadlines to a later date?
It is very stereotypical to say that all cars as they age they start polluting. Why do manufacturers want to skip BS5 and jump to BS6 only by 2020?

If they are really not bothered about taxing a buyer, why not simply jump to BS6 at the earliest and pass on whatever is the cost to the buyer. But hold on, this will impact the sales while the funny act will only tax the buyer and increase the sales.

There is very clear conflict of interest.

re: SIAM asks government to ban 15-year old cars

Initial BS V dates proposed were 2019, but Indian Government wants to be ahead in the curve with the research and development of better emission regulations than other countries, hence they are skipping BS V and launching BS VI in 2020.

Here are some of the goals they want to achieve in the BS VI emission regulations:

re: SIAM asks government to ban 15-year old cars

Pollution, emissions and automobiles!

It would be great if we don't generalize things and actually look at the condition of the vehicles, the other industries adding to the pollution and yes, as mentioned earlier the overloaded, old trucks.

Even if that's a long shot, they can look at cleanliness and work on reducing the dust pollution on the roads. I guess that will make things more breathable. Did I forget plastic?

re: SIAM asks government to ban 15-year old cars

Lets ban vehicles that are 15 years old now and after milking customers lets ban vehicles that dont have dual airbags because they are not safe and so on and so forth.

Lets not forget that building a car in itself contributes to pollution. A person using a 15 year old car sparingly would pollute less if he retained the car rather than replacing it with a new one.

Sure they did, next it'll be 10 years and so on. SIAM is afterall a wonderful organization that has striven tirelessly to reduce the pollution in our environment so that we have less headaches, less infections and way lesser asthma, no wait...

We've (I included) discussed it in multiple places on the same topic years ago so I will not repeat it again, in this context its amusing how SIAM always never fails to lobby for ban of old vehicles each year.. they must be getting real desperate for a sales bonanza, its money that makes the world greener at the end, certainly not the oxygen or leaves or clean water.

Of faux pas's and unintended puns, these conventions sure must be a blast to attend, lets not forget that each of these meetings are held to find reasons to boost the bottomline, heck with all else.

re: SIAM asks government to ban 15-year old cars

So now we know who is advising the NGT on measures to curb vehicular pollution. What about curbing personal vehicles altogether? No pollution, no oil imports, no lifestyle diseases and hopefully, no rigged pollution certificates for new cars from Chevrolet, Volkswagen and other unscrupulous members of SIAM.

re: SIAM asks government to ban 15-year old cars

Sure, ban 15 year-old cars because they are "polluting".

Provided you have the guts to ban *every* 15 year old vehicle. That includes those rickety buses, trucks and awful six-seaters.

If they even attempt such a move with CVs, these guys will be hunted down.

But no, milk the poor tax-paying, law-abiding common man. Idiots.

If this figure of 50% is true, it is far too much exposure on one industry. Given the daily flip flop on rules that takes place, we risk destabilizing this industry.

This requires a thread of its own, mostly. Minister making it extremely clear that their intention is to reduce car sales.
