Jeep India starts exporting the Compass

Jeep India has started exporting right-hand drive versions of the Compass. The first batch of 600 units was shipped from Bombay Port Trust destined for Australia and Japan. The Jeep Compass is manufactured at the company's Ranjangaon factory, near Pune. FCA India has invested over US$ 280 million / Rs. 1800 crore in the Compass project.

Apart from India, the Compass is also manufactured in Brazil, Mexico and China, however India is the only country manufacturing the right-hand drive versions of the SUV. The car maker has plans to export the RHD vehicles to the UK, New Zealand and South Africa among other international markets through the ongoing quarter of 2017.

The Jeep Compass was launched in India earlier this year and it comes with a choice of two engines - a 1,368 cc, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 160 BHP and a torque of 250 NM and a 1,956 cc, turbocharged diesel unit which pumps out 171 BHP and a peak torque of 350 Nm. The engines are mated to a 6-speed manual transmission while an optional 7-speed dual-clutch is available only on the petrol version. The 4x4 variant only comes with a diesel engine and in Limited/ Limited(O) trim. The traction management system on the 4x4 model lets the driver choose between four driving modes- Auto, Mud, Sand and Snow.

I can see a few Trailhawk variants as well.

I wish Jeep launches the Compass Trailhawk in India as well. Although it would be priced at a premium, I am sure there would be takers for the trail rated (and hence more competent) spec.

While I'm all for exports as they're good for the country, just wish Jeep would have delayed exporting until the local order book was completely taken care of. There is still a waiting period for this sexy new SUV .

Nevertheless, happy for FCA. How one product can change the business.

Re: Jeep India starts exporting the Compass

Production has stabilized at 150 per day only right now. So, judging by the response here in India and an expected good response in other markets, post the good NCAP ratings, FCA will be hard pressed to manage supplies for the domestic and export markets.

Let's see how FCA copes with this scenario.

I am happy that Jeep is doing well in India, I have always liked Fiats, they make good driver cars.

I hope the good performance of the Jeep gives FCA some confidence to bring in better models.

True. They are definitely a one-trick pony. Maybe that's their management mantra. Get a product out and beat it to death over multiple years till the consumer gets totally fatigued even thinking about the brand. Rinse and repeat.

Yes. Further good days ahead when they launch the Renegade at a more affordable price point with a localized 1.6 multijet engine

Why is it that, in the top pics, the cars are on a red carpet.?
Is it some celebration or to save the tyres from scratches and cuts, or is there some other reason.

This looks like the red carpet was for the export kick off function or some sort. I dont think it is for loading up the cars on the ship.

Re: Jeep India starts exporting the Compass

FCA should introduce the Renegade as soon as possible to encash on the goodwill generated by the positive response to the Compass.

FCA should play its cards smart. There is definitely room for a Jeep below the Compass (say 10 - 15 lakhs) as well as above it (30 - 35 lakhs).

Betting on brand 'Jeep' rather than 'Fiat' must have just saved the company in India. Their engine business is set to end with Maruti & Tata both developing their own diesels. The 1.3L MJD should get an award for the profits its generated. Can't think of any other company which made so much money off a single engine (thanks to Maruti).

Do you think they can price the Grand Cherokee at 30-35 lakhs if they assemble it in India ? Should be possible I guess, considering its prices match the Santa Fe in the USA and Santa Fe was in the 30-35 range.

It will definitely find more takers than the Endeavour and will trump both the Fortuner and Endeavour in off road capability.

The sale of the Jeep Compass just started in New Zealand. It is a very different model in terms of the feature set and the motor. The features that we miss and a whole lot more are all present on the NZ model.

The biggest change is the motor. There is no diesel on offer. Don't know why. Maybe due to low market penetration of diesel vehicles in general. We get the 2.4l Chrysler sourced Tigershark engine that uses Fiat's infinitely variable MultiAir 2 system. 184 horses & 229nm torque. I still feel Fiat's very own 1.4l Turbo should have been a better option. Will be a lot more efficient than the 2.4l motor. Transmission options are 6 & 9 speed AT. There is no manual.

Features include the latest U Connect 8.4inch touch screen, Apple and Android capable, Beats Audio 9 speaker entertainment system with Subwoofer. The driver gets another 7 inch Driver Infotainment display in the instrument cluster. Adaptive Cruise control, lane departure warning, Automatic headlamps and wipers, electric tailgate, Automatic Parking, Auto Dim IRVM, Electric Driver & Passenger seats, electric lumbar adjust, 7 Airbags, Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking.

The Trailhawk edition goes further with an Off Road specific Suspension, Active Low Range, Raised Ride Height, Skid Plates and Recovery Hooks.

Looking at the spec sheet and features, the Compass is loaded to the gills with kit.

The most important bit is that the Compass is being sourced from India.
