Tavera VS Bolero Vs Sumo

Top Gear India UV test:

Chevrolet Tavera Elite B3 VS Mahindra Bolero SLX VS Tata Sumo Victa GX Turbo

Verdict:
This was a clear ‘no contest’. The Tavera easily walked away with the crown and that’s not at all surprising as it’s a far more modern vehicle and clearly generations ahead of its two rivals. Some may even argue that it was an unfair competition, but we cannot be blamed. The fault lies with the complex requirements of the Indian market. The Bolero and Sumo are much cheaper and looked upon as sturdy workhorses ideal to ferry passengers and there are enough people who yet want them. And with its lower end versions, the Tavera also targets these very same customers.
The Bolero and Sumo, are quite similar and the fight between them would have been closer had not Mahindra made improvements to the interiors and to some extent also to the exteriors. But would any of us buy either? We think not. We would opt for the Tavera mainly because it has superior driving dynamics, is more comfortable and, most importantly, because you feel more secure behind the wheel. We know because we drove all three on a very wet day. And as we all know ‘its slippery when wet’.

Sure Tavera is a good car but its a lot more expensive.

So if I had to pick out of these three I would pick Sumo.
Money not being an issue it would be Tavera.

Dude!! Do I miss my Qualis??? Curse Toyota!!

BTW, Tavera is the better option than the other 2 but it could do better in pricing and quality.

I agree with Steeroid & Zak completely. If I was looking at that segment I would buy a good, second-hand Qualis & would be very happy knowing I have the better product than the three cars compared here.

What if I don't want to buy a second hand car? What's the choice then?

I would buy the Sumo Victa...

Three reasons...

1. Tavera is better, but too expensive... And since it doesnt have any better image than the Sumo... No good in paying that much amount...

2. Looks butcher when fixed up with a bull bar... A bread box desgn... But looks really butch when little accesorries...

3. All the space to play with... same the Bolero also has... But... I like the Sumo better than bolero...

My choice only... Am not generalising...

I can't say Bolero has same space like Sumo. Rear is cramped.

Sumo has almost the same wheelbase like Indica. And one of the most unsafe thingy to drive.

I have read the comparisons in Top gear magazine while i agree about overall build integrity and packaging mentioned about tavera i observed that the Tata sumo victa turbo gx featured in the magazine had no HVAC while my 5 month old example has it!!

and the power delivery mentioned in the magazine is again far cry from my experience,

the steering is too light and quick apart from this i cannot fault it much for what i have paid for,i have done a few things and it is a much better vehicle today i.e

1)i have removed the infernal 'cat'.
2)i have replaced the FE system with that of bosch.
3)i have set the pump timing to .83 instead of company set .90.
4)i have re-cambered the rear leafs.

now the sumo is ready to take on the world,i would love it if some one got those magazine people to do a re-test...they can put the cat back if they want for beauraucracy's sake!!!

then get a 3rd hand or 4th hand qualis, still it will be better than the 3 listed. tavera looks like an ambulance/morgue van. bolero looks the best of the three, but the clutch & brake pedals do not provide a good driving experience. otherwise the bolero is good.
