Hyundai Verna to get new variant with 1.4L engine. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 7.79 lakhs

Earlier this week, Hyundai launched the new Verna in India with 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines. Now, according to a media report, the company could launch an entry-level variant of the new Verna with a 1.4-litre engine.

It may be recalled that the previous generation Verna was offered with a 1.4-litre, 107 BHP petrol engine and a 90 BHP diesel motor. In fact, the engine is still being built for export markets. It is this same engine that could be used in the new Verna at a later date. However, Hyundai has not made any official announcement regarding this development.

The new Verna with a 1.6-litre petrol engine in base trim is priced at Rs. 8.00 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The 1.4-litre variant is expected to be priced lower.

Just now saw an ad on tv for the Verna. At the end of the ad, one small line read "now available with 1.4 petrol.". So the rumour is true then. Couldn't take a photo of the same as it was displayed for just a few seconds.

re: Hyundai Verna to get new variant with 1.4L engine. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 7.79 lakhs

Over the past few months - the C-segment sedan has consistently clocked sales figures that have kept the bean counters at Hyundai grinning. What did come as a severe blow, though, was the fact that the GST structure classified the Verna as a luxury car - ultimately attracting a higher tax percentage - taking the total tally of taxes up to 53 per cent from 48 per cent.

Why's that you ask? Well, any car that's above four metres in length, with an engine that's greater than 1500cc is classified as a luxury car in the GST council's book. This oddball rule meant the Verna is considered a luxury item, whereas an Audi A4 with a 1.4 turbo-petrol isn't. WHAT!

To circle around this issue, Hyundai is bringing the 1.4-litre petrol engine back from hibernation. The motor develops 107PS of power and 135Nm of torque and already does duty under the hood of the Russian-spec Verna aka the Solaris. Hyundai has slyly confirmed the addition of the engine in a TVC that simply reads “Available in 1.4 Petrol”. A couple of quick calls to dealerships tells us that the launch is expected later this week.

To keep prices in check, we're expecting Hyundai to offer a sole 5-speed manual transmission. An old-school 4-speed automatic was available with the older iteration of the car, but that's likely to be dropped considering it gave the Verna a serious drinking problem.

re: Hyundai Verna to get new variant with 1.4L engine. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 7.79 lakhs

Hyundai Verna 1.4 petrol price revealed.

Quote:
The starting price (ex-showroom, Mumbai) for the Verna 1.4 E variant is Rs 7.29 lakh. Hyundai has not revealed prices for the better-equipped Verna 1.4 EX trim as of now. The cheaper and less-powerful Verna 1.4 undercuts the 1.6-litre base variant by around Rs 70,000; the 1.6 E MT costs Rs 7.99 lakh.

The 1.4-litre engine in the Verna is the same unit seen in the i20 automatic. Hyundai, however, will soon discontinue this engine in the hatchback.

The 1.4 Verna Petrol would be the final nail in the coffin of Ciaz, oh!! wait there is the 1.4 Verna Diesel also in the offing. The base version is pretty well equipped (for the price it is being offered at) if one wants a good sedan with safety features and without the bells and whistles.

The excellent iVtec engine couldn't do, the highly refined Verna 1.6L Diesel couldn't do, now you think a below-par engine(w.r.t city and verna standards) would kill Ciaz off? So many times it has been predicted that Ciaz would die and become irrelevant but it is still up there with the competition.

I think it is a good move by Hyundai and offers a good option for people but it is sad that it is not available in sx trim.

This is a good addition to make the Verna more accessible at the lower end.

Any news of the Diesel SX(O) AT being introduced? That is something quite a few people are looking forward to.

Hyundai Verna 1.4L petrol launched at Rs. 7.80 lakh

Hyundai has now added a third engine option for the Verna. A 1.4-litre petrol engine, apart from the existing 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engines, is available on the base E and EX trims, priced at Rs. 7.80 lakh and Rs. 9.10 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) respectively. The company has meanwhile discontinued the petrol 1.6 E and 1.6 EX MT variants.

In terms of equipment, the Verna 1.4 E and 1.4 EX get the same features as the entry-level variants with the 1.6-litre engine. On the outside, the Verna 1.4 gets halogen headlights, chrome grille, electric ORVMs with integrated turn signals and steel wheels.

The interiors are finished in a dual-tone. Features like automatic climate control and 5.0-inch touchscreen audio system is available on the EX trim. Safety features like ABS, driver and passenger airbags and ISOFIX child seat mounting points are standard. Additionally, the EX variant gets Park Assist with rear camera, front fog lamps, automatic headlamps with escort function, impact and speed sensing auto door locks and keyless entry.

The 1.4-litre Kappa, 4-cylinder petrol engine offered on the Verna is identical to the engine that powers the Elite i20 automatic. It produces 98.6 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 133 Nm of peak torque @ 4,000 rpm and is only offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Hyundai claims that the Verna 1.4 delivers a fuel economy of 19.1 km/l.

Variant-wise ex-showroom Delhi prices are:

Petrol:

1.4L E MT - Rs. 7,79,990

1.4L EX MT - Rs. 9,09,990

1.6L EX AT - Rs. 10,48,990

1.6L SX MT - Rs. 9,68,990

1.6L SX(O) MT - Rs. 11,34,990

1.6L SX(O) AT - Rs. 12,48,990

Diesel:

1.6L E MT - Rs. 9,42,990

1.6L EX MT - Rs. 10,24,990

1.6L EX AT - Rs. 11,67,990

1.6L SX MT - Rs. 11,37,990

1.6L SX(O) MT - Rs. 12,68,990

1.6L SX+ AT - Rs. 12,87,990

Re: Hyundai Verna 1.4L petrol launched at Rs. 7.80 lakh

The existing ex-showroom prices of the variants for Delhi are

1.6L Gamma Dual VTVT 6-Speed Manual E - 799,990
1.6L Gamma Dual VTVT 6-Speed Manual EX - 929,990

So there is a saving of 20K. Not sure, if a buyer spending so much would have preferred the more powerful 1.6L engine when the price difference is so less.

Is this to undercut the competition? Ciaz Sigma Petrol starts at 7,76,000 Ex-showroom Delhi

Hyundai doing an i20 again. Reduce features (engine change in this case) while holding (then slowly increasing) prices.

Re: Hyundai Verna 1.4L petrol launched at Rs. 7.80 lakh

I wonder whether it would have made sense for Hyundai to offer an AT for the 1.4 petrol. It might have had quite a few takers I think.

Drive on,

Re: Hyundai Verna 1.4L petrol launched at Rs. 7.80 lakh

Bad move in my opinion. Now people are moving towards petrol engines over diesels. They have removed 2 base versions of petrol which were affordable and attraction factor for people. 1.4 is just 20 K less is a shocker. December month sales figure already shows Verna has lost all the Oomph factor. Surely sales will come down in coming months, advantage City and Ciaz
