Although equally unsafe, I think Maruti sells the same amount of Swifts, Balenos, WagonRs as an Alto! Although they cost much more than an alto.

Really?

Imagine India's two wheeler industry without Maruti Suzuki choking up 50% of the market with it's mediocrity? Did India have to wait 6 decades to see a motorcycle on these shoes?

Were we riding around in unicycles or donkeys, day to day before Suzuki's two wheeler entry in 2006? Is that the stories Indians read or discuss in the two wheeler section?

NOPE, instead Indian two wheeler manufacturers are among the biggest and most successful in the world. India exported 3.5 million two wheelers in FY 2019-20. Unlike the car space, the India two wheeler industry is vibrant with successful and profitable companies who compete with each other in various segments.

Wonder what would happen to Suzuki had it been a late entrant to the Indian market? A Suzuki without a 2 decade head start or a Govt. of India partnership?

I have no hope for Suzuki being successful in the EV space. Because when the day comes that EV sales do skyrocket in India, do you know what Suzuki will do?

What Suzuki India will do is that they'll create an online calculator for you to find out how many miles you will have to drive your EV to recover the costs! That is about as much innovation one will see from what is sadly India's largest and oldest passenger car manufacturer!

Correct!! This fact can further be buttressed by checking the 'strength of brand Suzuki' in other markets.

If Suzuki was so great, it would have ruled in other markets as well (atleast emerging ones).

Re: Maruti-Suzuki in onslaught mode - Plans a FOURTH plant in India

Maruti Suzuki is looking to get back to the 50% market share from the current ~ 43%.

MD Hisashi Takeuchi , New MD at Maruti Suzuki:

Quote:
we have a strong product plan to do that, including many SUVs for the Indian market. Plus, we have many more ideas to enhance our CNG portfolio. I'm sure this will help up us increase our market share gradually to as much as close to 50 per cent.
On EV's:
Quote:
We have a factory in Gujarat and in Haryana. We will introduce EVs one by one. The first EV must be produced somewhere either in Gujarat or Haryana. We had a discussion on where to produce it. One of the advantages of producing in Gujarat is that they're close to the export port from India. We will market this EV strongly in India but at the same time, it's a strategically important model for global Suzuki also because this is one of the first EVs that is going to be introduced in the global market. Hence, we have to be also strong in exports. So, Gujarat being closer to the port is one of the big advantages. But if EV becomes 50 per cent of the total market then of course every factory of MSI and Suzuki will start producing EVs.
Quote:
Suzuki group is paying extra attention on how to come close to carbon neutrality in this market. In India by 2030, EV penetration will be 30 per cent. Industry specialists say it will be between 8-10 per cent.

That means the remaining portion of the cars will be non-EVs. And that will be newly manufactured and registered in the Indian market. So, we have to introduce EVs but for those cars which are non-EVs also we have to address them with much better technology to make them environmentally friendly. To achieve this, we believe we have to employ all possible technologies which are better for environment. Of course we'll do EVs but we're also trying to take a technology-neutral approach.
Quote:
we don't care which technology we're going to employ as long as it works towards a better environment and is cost-effective. Because at the end of the day the customer will decide which car to drive, not the government or the manufacturers. We have to make sure we're chosen by the customer that's why it has to be a technology which is good for the environment as well as good for the pocket.
