Well the future of the light duty vehicle market, till the electric cars take over is going to be with gasoline powered cars. BS-VI norms require the quantity of sulphur to be less than 10 ppm (parts per million) and refining diesel to that requirement is going to add more cost, which will further close the tiny price gap between the two fuels.

What's worse? Diesel cars need lot of additional components - SCR (selective catalytic reduction) an ammonia tank to reduce NOx emissions, and many other add-ons to comply with BS-VI requirements. These would further push the cost of manufacturing diesel engines to the extent that business case of buying a diesel for most of us would be negative. So the market for diesel vehicles for such light-duty applications is bound to shrink even further, and it makes sense for VW to not invest in them.

Skoda and VW should stop talking and making presentations and launch something quick ! 2021 is a long way ahead. By then Tata and Mahindra would have a series of new launches and Kia would have sort of established itself as a premium player, and its positioning would be very similar to VW and Skoda. Add to that the backing of Hyundai and the way they can build dealer network, it might be too late for Skoda and VW

The new ŠKODA model offers the best of two worlds. It combines the advantages of an SUV – raised seating position, better overview, more comfortable ingress and egress, increased ground clearance – with the agility and handling of a compact car. This makes the ŠKODA urban crossover model an ideal car for the city and beyond. Based on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB), ŠKODA model offers new assistance systems along with many Simply Clever features – one of the brand’s hallmarks, along with the spacious interior.

The India-spec Škoda SUV will be longer than the European version – 4.19m instead of 4.1m. The India-spec SUV will get more legroom at the back and a reclining seat that can be adjusted based on whether there is a requirement for additional legroom in the rear seat or cargo room in the boot. The new SUV will be powered by a 1.5-litre, direct-injection petrol engine that makes around 130hp.
No diesel variant will be available. Škoda could look at a CNG variant, though.

But the Kamiq has been in the Chinese market for sometime now? They had mentioned this during the presentation for the Scala.

From the Skoda CN site. All three seem to be on different platforms. Would be interesting to see the Kamiq in India compete with Harrier/Creta. clap:

As mentioned in the press release in the preceding post, Skoda acknowledge this name has been established in China. However, what is not stated is the non-China Kamiq will be more related to the Karoq and not a stripped down budget model as sold in China

As part of the ‘INDIA 2.0’ project, ŠKODA AUTO is in charge of the Volkswagen Group’s planned model campaign on the Indian market and will be producing new models locally based on the sub-compact platform MQB A0, initially focusing on India (MQB-A0-IN). ŠKODA and Volkswagen will be developing various models on this platform. The model campaign will be launched in 2020 with an SUV. The second step will involve the manufacturer examining the possibility of exporting the vehicles produced in India. To ensure that the planned models best meet the needs of Indian customers, ŠKODA AUTO will be relying on maximum market proximity from the outset. The technical development of the new vehicles will take place primarily in India, for which a new technology centre was opened in January. The car manufacturer plans to gradually create new jobs locally.

They should definitely have the 1.5 TSI in place. please:

At the price the Kamiq will launch, prospective buyers will not be looking for compromise and will want the 4 cylinder goodness of the TSI. No offence to the 1.0 3-pot TSI but European reviewers do finding it lacking though it has adequate performance on tap.

I am super-duper excited about this car. This car looks a perfect Creta beater in terms of features, looks, quality. The only concern I have is the relatively short height of 1530m which is similar to hatchbacks (Swift has exactly the same height), which will mean it wont have the road presence of a SUV.

I will wait till I see it in flesh, but I have not seen any 'SUV' with such a low height. I hope this is a typo
