The current hottest and crowded SUV segment is clearly a Diesel dominated one!

- 82% of the cars sold are of diesel ( some are only available in diesel)
- Duster, Creta , Kicks - 70% sold are of diesel
- Post BS VI it will be interesting to see how they stand in the split.

It is clearly evident that it will be suicide if Renault and Nissan stop selling Diesels in India. For SUVs, diesels are here to say.
These cars are heavy and run a lot on the highways, diesel is a must for any car maker if they plan to sell SUVs.

Creta is the only car that sells significant numbers of petrol models here as it is lighter than others and is suited to the urban setup.

Hyundai would not let go off its diesels. For one, they have pretty good powerful diesels in the Verna and the Creta. And that keeps traditional diesel customers happy. Second, the petrol motors from Hyundai are not efficient, hence there is a skew towards diesels in case of the Verna and the Creta. In fact, even the Hyundai diesels are not as efficient as the others.
Similarly, people perceive that if its Skoda and VW its got to be Diesel, again very similar factors, all petrols except the Tsi are quite average from VW and the diesels are nice and powerful, although quite noisy. VW will find it most difficult to survive in India without diesels, especially if they were to launch a Creta sized SUV. Would take a lot of marketing to change the image.

FY-19, Compact Sedan- Diesel Vs. Petrol sales. Though this segment has purchases influenced by the logistic segments, shows still a petrol dominated segment

- 59% of the cars sold are petrol driven. The leader in this segment Dzire sees an almost even split between the two, with an edge favoring petrol.

- Honda's Amaze Petrol variant is a clear choice as compared to diesel.

- Ford's Aspire shows an equal split in the choice between petrol and diesel.

- Tata's Tigor is predominantly a petrol driven choice while Zest is a diesel one( taxi?)

The T Cross has been launched with a diesel, but according to VW, they aren't launching any diesel cars in that segment in India. We need to get better quality of fuel before the good engines make it here. The 1.5 TSI evo should be a great all rounder.

Very interesting indeed. I expected petrol to diesel ratio to be closer to 70:30 as most of the petrol engines are efficient enough. What's more interesting is the 1.2Lakh odd Diesel Dzires out there, and post 2020, Maruti will not have a diesel Dzire, Honda and Hyundai stand to gain huge from Maruti's exit.

Premium hatchback is primarily an all Petrol segment, however Ford in particular sees its diesel variant in demand.

- 89% of the cars sold by the segment leader sees a favorable petrol dominant sales.

- Overall segment has 83% favouring the petrol variant.

I don't understand. Why do a lot of people go for the petrol i20. The engine is average and Hyundai petrols are not the most fuel efficient. Even stranger considering the diesel is in every way superior to the petrol.

I think people who opt for i20 petrol look for a sedate car with sheer refinement but not a punchy engine. Most of these petrol heads must be point to point commuters and drive very rarely on highways. It's definitely not best it class but does it's job in the city and has those stylish looks.

Most of these premium hatchbacks are sold in cities where these cars don't run much, hence fuel efficiency is not a concern for these folks in cities, also these cars rarely are bought as cabs.

Diesels are still preferred in smaller towns and cities and by people who do long highway runs.

Good opportunity for Tata Motors to plonk BSVI ready 1.5 diesel engine to Tigor and push it more. Sad to see Tigor taking the beat. It needs a better engine than anything else. But don't think that happens either :deadhorse Somehow Tata got everything wrong with Tigor since beginning.
