In the end, ours is free country and people are free to buy what they wish. Investments in non- critical sectors that do not endanger national security must always be welcome.

Boycotting something never helps anyone especially when we, as a country, do not have the capacity to match the adversary economically or militarily.

He was attending the opening of the expressway EV corridor. MG motors happened to sponsor the event. No need to read anything more into that.

If they were to stand up to their convictions, they could have asked for a change of sponsors or refused. Or perhaps they have already determined that MG aka SAIC is less of a threat than Tiktok.

If the media's favourite whipping boy from the opposition parties had attended such an event, it would have been all over the news. He would even have been called an anti-national, Maoist, Traitor and what not. But I suppose people in power are above questioning!!! It is only the common & powerless citizen who needs to prove his patriotism by boycotting China!!!

Can you imagine how silly and hypocritical it looks when the same General, who threatened a larger conflict with China recently, lands up in a promotional event for a Chinese car company? The MP probably wasn't aware of it because for her ignorance and politicians are hypocrites anyway. But the General and that too in his CDS/Army uniform? The same army that Col Babu & his men belonged to? The Chinese must be laughing at us!!!!

As I said earlier, I have no problem with people on either side of the Boycott CHina divide. They are right in their own way and their views are to be respected. But why this "boycott" hypocrisy and pussyfooting by the people in power? Even the Chinese don't show such hypocrisy to the sworn enemies - the Americans.

Great Wall produces one of the world's cheapest EVs and if they make it in India, it can do well for the country. I don't think they will though.
As for your comments about other posters, live and let live. If people want to buy cars from a company that's involved in killing our soldiers in Ladakh, and be proud of it claiming to be Indian, let them be. Democracy, everyone has an opinion no matter how distasteful it is.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but in this time where the topic of safety is once again in the spotlight, thought we should know about this. GWM pickup truck had a poor performance in a crash test in Africa. Look at the amount of deformation on the A-pillar and roof.

India to clear 45 investments from China, likely to include Great Wall and SAIC.

As long as GWM is able to set up the plant, it would be good for folks at ex-GM plant at Talegaon who have lost their livelihoods and also will bring in a lot of good and prosperity to the region.

GWM shifts its strategy for India - Likely to bring units as CBU and CKD's, targets EV's Hybrids and Hydrogen fuel-cell technologies.

Quote:
Instead of a billion-dollar plan, the company has pruned its capital outlay for India and will instead look at a top-down strategy that focuses on importing knocked-down kits and completely built units to seed its brand in India.

company will rely and D segment SUV and a B segment electric hatchback or an SUV is being explored which may be imported as a completely built unit.

The intention is to focus on cleaner technologies –hybrid, electric as well as hydrogen fuel-cell technology - and use them as differentiators

the company was hopeful of getting FDI clearance from the government in Q1 of FY-22 once several state elections are over. The company had signed a term sheet with General Motors to acquire the Talegaon facility, which is set to expire in Q2 of FY-22

Yeah, who can blame them? The company waited so long for the Indian government to give the nod. Billion dollar plan and yet the Indian government was sitting on it for months..Seems like India's loss is Thailand's or Russia's gain!

Great Wall Motors India website goes live

The official website for Great Wall Motors' Indian subsidiary is now live.

The website has information about the brand and its sub-brand Haval. Interestingly, you will find a lot of images of the Haval F7 on the homepage. It seems GWM will be focusing on this particular model as it kick starts its India campaign.

In the international market, the F7 is offered with a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 148 BHP and 280 Nm and a 2.0-litre petrol unit that puts out 188 BHP and 340 Nm. Both engines come paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The Chinese carmaker had big plans for India. But, its entry was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other geopolitical issues. Reports suggest that the company is looking to reduce its investment plan and take the CBU route instead.

Thanks to Gagan for sharing this information with other enthusiasts via this Team-BHP page!

I don't think the website went live recently. I remember going through this one last year and can see that I visited it on 2nd March 2020. Also remember seeing a lot of the current content back then itself, but not sure if they've added anything new since.

No, this website was live right from the Auto Expo of last year and it remained so even when the border issue had escalated.

They should start their game with HAVAL H2 and HAVAL H6 in India. GWM badge is usually slapped on their pickups and HAVAL branding is used for their SUVs.

Quality of HAVAL cars (have checked few of them here in SAUDI) are definitely better than MG I would say.

Great Wall Motor to shift some India investment to Brazil after approval delays.

In 2020, Great Wall unveiled plans to invest $1 bln in India
Part of the $1 bln being re-allocated to Brazil

Great Wall committed to India but cautious over delays

The re-allocation, which could range up to $300 million, comes as the sources said the maker of popular sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) and pick-ups was close to acquiring a former Daimler (DAIGn.DE) plant in Brazil to build cars

Brazil is almost a done deal and it did not make sense to keep the funds blocked for India, explaining the rationale for the change of focus.

Meanwhile in India, the Chinese UV manufacturer Great Wall Motors recently filed a trademark for the ‘Aure’ name in India, prompting speculations about its anticipated entry

Following a late FDI approval, the Chinese manufacturer changed its strategy earlier this year, from local manufacturing to importing CKD and CBU vehicles. Now, it seems like the automaker is preparing for its debut in our market soon, as it recently trademarked the name ‘Aure’ in India for a new vehicle, likely an SUV.

Another major investment gone down the drain. In a globalised world, it’s sad that such huge investments are also stuck in getting approvals. India’s loss is Brazil’s gain. As soon as the talks between Ford and Great Wall Motors collapsed due to approval delays, it was game over.

While we lament that our taxation policy is prohibitive for the auto sector, we also are guilty of approval delays when someone comes calling, so what if they are Chinese. Major source of employment generation gone away by procedural delays. Sad
