re: China-based Great Wall Motors to enter India by 2021-22. EDIT: Quits even before starting

The term “Dargo” in the trademark stands for “Dare to go” according to Haval.

Quote:
Great Wall Motor has received the trademark for the Haval Dargo nameplate in India. The SUV is “inspired” by the Ford Bronco off-roader and could be launched soon in India.

Called the Big Dog in China, the Haval Dargo comes with a rugged front end replete with a trapezoidal grille, circular LED headlights, each with a ring-style DRL, LED fog lamps, and a minimalist bumper.

The car, which can be had as a front- and all-wheel drive model, will even have a powered tailgate, drive modes and is offered with 2 engine options overseas. The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol is good for 169 HP, whereas the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol motor makes 211 HP. A 7-speed DCT will be teamed with them.

It costs the Indian equivalent of between Rs. 14 lakhs and Rs. 16.75 lakhs in neighbouring China and should be launched in India later this year provided that Great Wall sorts all of its issues swiftly.

Everything about this car look good other than the HAVAL logo

It helps that the design takes in elements from Bronco, Renegade and Compass. But what about the logo and the name? There is "hawala" that it can get called quite easily in India

re: China-based Great Wall Motors to enter India by 2021-22. EDIT: Quits even before starting

Quote:
Great Wall Motors Company (GWM), China’s largest sports utility vehicle maker, may make a quiet exit from India if the planned purchase of an automobile plant isn’t concluded by mid-2022, people familiar with the matter said.

General Motors exited India in 2017. However, the sale of the US auto company’s factory to the Chinese auto giant remains in limbo after a deal signed in January 2020.

Additionally, GWM’s staff strength in India has been dropping.

“Two years ago, GWM was on a hiring spree and had 75 people, including 20 Indians, on its management’s payroll. But that headcount has now dwindled to 30 people, including 10 Indians,” people aware of the development said.
It looks like this one is a dud before take-off. Handover of the plant is yet to happen and govt is dragging its feet over lot of things. It could have been better managed in my opinion.

It reminds me of this popular meme,

China-based Great Wall Motors to enter India by 2021-22. EDIT: Quits even before starting-bhaiyetohshuruhotehikhatamhogaya.jpg

Jokes apart, I would've personally loved GWM to give a shot in India, despite the tense and rather negative perception towards Chinese products, companies like MG have been fairly successful in the automotive industry and conglomerates like BBK have found massive success in India in the electronic goods sector. Alas, maybe it was for the good seeing the already saturated and intensely competitive companies and products."

Unsurprising outcome. I definitely expected this quite some time back.
In fact, even MG lost its sheen. The sales numbers reflect the loss of interest among customers.

This is a significant advantage for our homegrown brands - Tata and M&M, to improve their service network, ASS experience and of course product reliability.

Haval, to us Indians, is like that over-achiever cousin we all have.
Everybody around you loves him, even you should too, but after all these years you know you just can’t have him around.

Re: China-based Great Wall Motors to enter India by 2021-22. EDIT: Quits even before starting

While the market is riddled with mad high car prices, this is only sad for the Indian consumer.

Given the cars were to be manufactured here in India, these Chinese brands are just the same as European, German, Japanese & other brands.

They would've built capacities to cater to massive market that Mahindra has shown exists and would've decimated Korean & German brands that charge a bomb for their products.

IMHO it's just political & corporate graft/cartel that didn't let them enter, because the crazy high taxes from sale of cars (a segment where consumer rights don't practically exist at all) would grow only with high prices of cars.

And the Govt doesn't want more people to own cars because there is no infrastructure & it simply won't get built. Lots more to say, but it'd be theoretical. Anyway they've left India for good now.

Disagree with you. Why should we encourage Chinese products when they do not even entertain Indian products in China? Ask Mahindra for instance. They tried to set up a manufacturing plant and sell Mahindra tractors in China. Did not work. They had to sell the plant to their JV partner and withdraw from the markets. "And the Govt doesn't want more people to own cars because there is no infrastructure & it simply won't get built." - Well, this is absolutely not true. More infra has been built over the last 7 years than the last 40 years.

Re: China-based Great Wall Motors to enter India by 2021-22. EDIT: Quits even before starting

I wonder if this will affect FAW’s plans to enter the country. The Haima cars they showed at Auto Expo 2020 looked extremely promising, so I hope that either BYD or FAW end up buying the Talegaon plant for three reasons:

1. Competition is good in our odd auto market. We have a market where there are limited brand options, and the threat of an existing brand in the market quitting at any point.

2. China’s auto market is quickly advancing. You can’t really deride Chinese cars for a perceived lack of build quality and features, when newer cars (especially EVs!) from the likes of NIO, Xpeng, BYD, Geely and even SAIC (MG’s parent company, who sell brilliant cars in China especially under the ‘Roewe’ brand) clearly prove otherwise. India deserves the new technology that is being developed in China, as it allows us to progress at the same time. Remember, the Chinese were the first to bring ADAS to the mass market. What will they bring next?

3. We don’t want a situation where Talegaon will fall into disrepair. GM’s management could very well let that happen, and then we’d have another case of what happened to HM’s plant post-2014.

I think the nose has been cut off to spite the face. Employment and possibly export opportunities have been lost.

Please read the below:

My POV
1. The automobile sector is one of the biggest employment generator. This is a clear loss of job opportunity for many. Same goes for component manufacturers also.
2. Choice to the Indian consumer - one less for sure.
3. Indian manufacturers also depend heavily on Chinese markets for lot of components. So how can they also be called as 💯 % Indian.

Re: China-based Great Wall Motors to enter India by 2021-22. EDIT: Quits even before starting

This may seem like an OT post, but the topic itself is political in nature.
I see no reason for encouraging any Chinese company to access the Indian market. As of now, China is the single biggest threat to India (and perhaps the world), both politically and economically and as a country they leave out no effort to threaten us in both these spheres. Lest we forget, there are still 50,000 Chinese soldiers standing on our borders ready to attack us. They don't believe in playing by any rules, ensure that they do everything unethical possible and breach every possible IP that they can. Their is no Chinese wall (!!) between the communist party, the government, the judiciary, the media, the military and the private enterprises in China. They are lucky the world is preoccupied with Russia to not give them the attention their practices deserve.

Nobody has claimed that Indian mfg fo does not depend on Chinese for components. "Heavily" may not be correct though - My point is, the less we depend on Chinese products better it is for us as a country. Anyway, this is a political point that I do not want to keep debating on

As per the Govt data, we buy 4 times more than what we sell to the PRC. PRC accounts for ~12% of all our imports. The next county is UAE with ~7% of all our imports coming from them.
