Re: Tata Tiago XZ+ features leaked ahead of launch. EDIT : Now launched at Rs. 5.57 lakh Have made an initial deposit for a XZ+ Petrol Manual Transmission after a long-ish test drive. Vehicle will be a replacement for our close to two decade old wagon-r. Should get delivery in a couple of week's time as I requested for a 2019 build which is yet to be despatched from plant.
Initial impressions are pretty fair. Build quality is definitely better than its adversary , Maruti Celerio. Cabin plastics too feel nice to the touch and most buttons, stalks and switches exude a robust feel.
Gripe point: no adjustable head restraints for rear even on a top model.
The test drive was pleasant enough. Granted the little Tiago is no fireball, but it's not slothful either. The 3-cylinder petrol feels lumpy at idle, smoothening out as the block warms up. Give it some stick and she does pick up her skirt and make a decent dash down the road, although at higher revs the engine becomes coarse to the ear. The tall third gear remains. What seems heartening is that annoying "flat-spot" in the lower reaches of the rev band , which plagued earlier Tiago's to " pogo-stick" jump & proceed in stop-go city traffic seems to have been eliminated.
Also front end grip and initial turn in "bite" into corners is very enjoyable on the larger wheels shod with lower aspect tyres. Ride comfort has not deteriorated at all and the car tracks true and straight at high speeds, imparting a lot of confidence. Well controlled body roll and the overall stability & grip of the vehicle in corners, actually allows you to carry pretty high speeds into bends, as you know the chassis balance remains unruffled, even if you hit an uneven patch mid-corner.
Brakes are also well weighted and panic braking makes the car stop in a straight line. The ABS calibration is nice with a gradual and progressive cut-in.
The auto climate control performance is satisfactory. The infotainment system remains a benchmark for the segment.
Headlights are now very good indeed with the adoption of projectors. With high beam, dippers and fog lights on, it's a Diwali party out there!
The bean counters at Tata Motors are having a field day it seems. Gone are the parcel tray thread lifters. Did the original Tiago have a luggage room lamp? This one doesn't. Assist grips have their damped action removed. Rear wheel wells have partial cladding - what was it before? Key doesn't have the gloss black insert anymore.
Overall the XZ+ is an excellent value for money package. Will share further after our car reaches us.
