India is now a Top 10 market for Toyota

India is among the top 10 markets in the world for Toyota. The Indian market was ranked no. 12 in 2016 and no. 11 in 2017. It overtook Saudi Arabia to take the 10th spot in 2018.

Toyota sold 1,52,000 vehicles, registering a growth of 9%. In comparison, the industry average was 5.5%. According to the company, the Indian market is expected to rise higher up the rankings and could become the third largest auto market for Toyota in the coming decade. The company expects its sales to grow with urbanisation and an expanding economy.

Toyota entered the Indian market with the Qualis in January 2000. In the past few years, its market share has remained in the 5-7% range.

Toyota has partnered with Maruti Suzuki to cater to the sub-Rs. 10 lakh market. As part of a model sharing deal, Toyota is expected to launch a Baleno-based hatchback later this year. The two carmakers are also working on small cars and EVs. Toyota also plans to leverage the government's new policy that allows the import of 2,500 completely built units (CBUs) without the need for homologation.

I would like to rephrase that a bit - Indian market is now the top 10th priority for Toyota.

If they really really wanted to capture the market - nothing much could have stood in their way anyways! Looks like they have started to act more seriously (But still in a risk averse manner) with their MSIL partnership - but I'm not sure if badge engineering will really get them an answer to the budget car question.

India does not bring in the numbers that matter though (revenues and profits).

Toyota Global revenues: $250 billion
Toyota India revenues: $2.6 billion

Toyota Global profits: $23 billion
Toyota India profits: $135 million

That is, India accounts for 1% of Toyota's revenues and 0.5% of Toyota's profits.

Re: India is now a Top 10 market for Toyota

All this has happened despite Toyota's average presence in the Indian car market. They have achieved this on the basis of the sales of their D-segment SUVs and MUVs. For a global giant like Toyota, having a presence in each and every car segment of India wouldn't have been much of a challenge. Their offerings for the mass market have been rare and quite average to say the least.

It looks like they are trying to rectify this via their partnership with MSIL, but I would like them to bring more true blue Toyotas to India.

They themselves are to be blamed isn't it?

If they had a brezza, dzire, ciaz, ertiga and i20 equivalent (in terms of pricing too) they could have earned thrice as much

They have the products in all these segments, but they end up doing the Yaris even these

Re: India is now a Top 10 market for Toyota

India has never been a priority for Toyota. Globally they will phase out every car in 5-6 years, the Etios twins are running in India for decades. I am not very positive about the Toyota-Suzuki Partnership either. People buy Toyota for a reason and I don't think
re-badging Suzuki as Toyota will justify the reason.

While I agree with the loss of focus for Toyota in India, I think their partnership with MSIL is a good one because both their brands have the same principles in the customer mind - cheap to own and maintain, sturdy motors, ease of ownership via a large network and good resale value. Neither Maruti or Toyota is known for great build or fast fun to drive vehicles, at least in the commuter segment. What remains to be seen is if they share their dealership and service center networks and if that influences a customer to buy one brand over another.

Toyota finally has India as it's 10th largest market when in fact it should have been it's 8th or 7th largest market. Distance to go.

Re: India is now a Top 10 market for Toyota

I have always felt Toyota's approach to India has been a little laid-back. They have never considered it a market that can cause a dent to their enormous bottom-lines. So it is more like throw in a few products, identify a couple that have a blind loyalty in India and sit back and reap the benefits of those.

Am a little surprised that it is a top 10 market, assume it is because they have slipped in some other markets?

Re: India is now a Top 10 market for Toyota

India is also perhaps the only Top 10 market where Toyota is a 'utility vehicle' manufacturer (its passenger cars hardly sell). The profits from the 20+ lakh Innova & 30+ lakh Fortuner would be tremendous.

On the other hand, I see Toyota India as a company which has wasted opportunities. They didn't get any modern hatchback, compact SUV or sedan here. And when they finally got the Yaris, they priced it like a Lexus and the car bombed . If Toyota had picked the right cars from its global portfolio and marketed them well, it could well be fighting with Hyundai for the no.2 spot.

The company has a history of making stupid decisions. They've made some good ones, but the bad ones outweigh them.

They don't seem to actually care. With just two hot-selling models, they nearly doubled their profits from 500+ to 900+ Crores in a year. Do they have any cause for concern?

Re: India is now a Top 10 market for Toyota

Given that none of Toyota's offerings have been able to break into the top 10 of the sales chart in India, this is an interesting development.

Could the partnership with Suzuki propel Toyota further up not just in value but also in terms of volume? Only time can answer that.
