Need a brute, boxy SUV! Mahindra & Tata, are you listening?

We need new brutish and boxy SUVs like Scorpio, Pajero, Safari - but a bit more modern.

TUV 300 - looks archaic, disproportionate and lacks style
Creta - Yuck!
Compass - Looks too small
XUV 500 - Not Brutish enough
Harrier - Identity crisis

Mahindra/Tata - can you guys do something about this?

- Big and Brutish, but modern and new
- Lots of power
- Features be damned
- Big Sunroof, Space and Comfy seats
- Lasts for atleast 10 years
- Affordable

I'm starting to see why Mahindra and Tata are having trouble making something you approve of.

and you forgot adding the most essential aspect that SUVs derived their identity from, a proper 4WD System (With low range and locking differential atleast on the rear)

The next gen XUV 500? Or maybe its Ford derivative? Should arrive in the next 12-18 months, but the sources are far and few.

Other than the above, in the near to medium future, I can only see the all new Scorpio meeting your criteria. But the timelines for its launch aren't very clear.

Need Brute, Boxy SUV! Mahindra, Tata - You guys listening?

Sorry, but do not understand the point of this thread. I guess Tata and Mahindra do keep a tab on whats the buzz word in social and digital media, but chances are that even team bhpians would not take this topic seriously. Because it seems to be just about looks. Frankly most folks in our forum look beyond that. Your requirement seems very superficial, just about how the car looks. No talk of what kind of power output or torque, 4X4 capabilities, just brute and boxy! Do you sort of intend to scare fellow motorists?

I would have thought that a discussion on an affordable, yet modern off roader with 4X4 would have been a good topic to ponder over. Something like the Suzuki Jimny, which has got decent reviews in most markets. Its compact, has decent off road capabilities and is very affordable. But this is no Brute looking car.

Well, if want something that looks butch, the ford endeavour is your best bet. And a cheaper option would be the Isuzu MUX pick up.

Lastly, most manufacturers are moving away from such cars globally. Its the era of cross overs. Compact cars that make sense in todays City conditions. The Jeep compass is a perfect example. Compact, yet quite capable. Yes, its not exactly affordable, may be it would be Jeep who would eventually launch a 10-15 lakh SUV that is just as capable as the Compass.

re: Need a brute, boxy SUV! Mahindra & Tata, are you listening?

I get the OP. There are no cars on offer with no-nonsense looks. In a sense, this is the third thread that surfaces the need for something like a 5-door Thar. Or a Bolero with a Thar front. Or something like the Tata Sierra, or something that looks like a smaller FJ Cruiser or Hummer. All current cars seem to come across as essentially unisex, with flowing curves and funky designs.

In the 90s, if you wanted to get a masculine-looking car you would get a Gypsy, or a Marshal, or a Contessa, or a Sierra. Throw some alloys on any of those, and wider tyres, and you would get an instant good-looker. In this era, for a good-looking car, you get what exactly? The closest to that need comes from VW, which is not very close.

So basically you want a force Ghurka with a sunroof and an interior from this decade. Aka low budget G-wagon

Tata only has to fit the Storme or Hexa's interiors, engine, drivetrain, suspension etc. to the Sumo and your wish will be granted!

Cheers,
Vikram

Brute and boxy ≠ Modern and new.

There are a couple of simple reasons many cars look similar to each other.
1. Pedestrian safety
2. Aerodynamics

Sorry, brute and boxy can't accommodate either pedestrian safety or aerodynamic body design.

Would that turn out to be expensive? If yes, then I understand if not, this is boxy enough for 2020.

I am pretty ok with the Storme or Scorpio's looks, but as of current SUV's, the Ford Endeavor looks the best, not very macho, but its there.

Storme needs to have few features more [that android auto for GMaps is a must have] plus a bit more refinement and finesse would be welcome and Scorpio needs to learn on how to manage interior space and its ride/handling.

I insist, M&M and Tata should and must form a JV for a SUV development.

Aren't you forgetting the Bolero and formerly Armada? They are good looking box SUVs.

How about the new Gurkha Extreme? It fits your criteria except the sunroof.

Quote:
- Big and Brute, modern and new -- Yes
- Lots of power -- Yes (at par with the segment)
- Features be damned -- Oh YES!
- Big Sunroof, Space and Comfy seats -- A little compromise here.
- Lasts for 10 years -- It would.
- Affordable -- Debatable. This is very subjective.
