The Thar 700 marks the 70th anniversary of the company. Mahindra has converted the last batch of 700 units of the present-day Thar into this special edition. It is available in two colour options - Aquamarine and Napoli Black. Meanwhile, the next-generation Thar is already under development.

The Thar 700 features a few cosmetic changes over the standard Thar. These include decals on the side and bonnet, black grille, the centre of the front bumper finished in silver, leatherette upholstery with Thar logo on the front seats, 5-spoke alloy wheels and a special badge with Mr. Anand Mahindra's signature. The SUV comes equipped with ABS.

Anyone can shed some light to the ABS here. Do you think it will be feasible to retrofit previous non ABS thar with it? It will be running the same ECU and most other hardware?

Re: Mahindra Thar 700 launched at Rs. 9.99 lakh

Happy 70th anniversary to M & M. This Indian success story commenced with two brothers Jagdish Chandra and Kailash Chandra Mahindra joining hands, firstly in 1945, to engage in steel business in Ludhiana and soon after to collaborate with Willys Overland Motors, Ohio, USA, to lay their hands upon assembling the Willys jeeps for the Indian market. It has grown now to a US $ 20.7 billion gaint, with presence in 100 plus countries, as 150 plus companies, employing 250,000 people. M & M is now ranked 17 th on the list of top companies in India by Fortune India 500, in 2018.

Back to the Thar, featured as its 70th anniversary special edition, the MUV has some OE goodies on offer to make it an exclusive piece, also with the front fender badge bearing signature of Mr Anand Mahindra, grandson of co-founder Mr Jagdish Chandra Mahindra. However, the alloy wheel design is borrowed from the 2009 Scorpio SLX /SLE (Refreshed version). These alloys looked awkward from day 1 in 2009 (not good by design even then) and have a freak and portruding bullock cart wheel-like hub at the centre. Not sure, how they ignored their better alloys of later years and zeroed upon this freakly designed one !

The 2009 Scorpio SLX /SLE with such freakly designed alloys was perhaps launched to commemorate their 60th anniversary and they now wanted at least one or two components from the 2009 edition to reappear in their 70th anniversary edition ! Hence these freakly designed alloys got lucky !

What a cool way to retire a car's generation! Even the last few buyers of this generation won't regret it now.

Honestly seeing that ad, I felt sad. Could never get one, and never will. Only if they had released with factory fitted top+anti rollover frame. Still love this Jeep—always will. God bless, BD sir. His signature should have been on this 700 release!

That's around 12.5 to 13 lakhs on road for a Thar, I doubt there will be many takers, this 700 lot is going to remain in the inventory for a long time.

Definitely not. A new Thar CRDe itself costs 9.5 lakhs ex-showroom and at 50k premium, this 700 edition is more bang for the buck for those bragging rights alone!

ABS is one of those things that is best done only at the factory level - a related discussion.

Must add that this is a smart way of maintaining the pricing. Usually, the discounts are highest on an outgoing generation car. The Thar 700 is probably the only car to bow out at a slightly higher price!

Re: Mahindra Thar 700 launched at Rs. 9.99 lakh

Wow! What a beautiful way to end a great journey! Hoping the next generation comes with an Automatic and 4x4! There is always a childhood dream lying dormant deep inside me, about owning a Jeep, which has taken me many places during my childhood. Now with age catching up ( left leg with the current traffic has made me a realist when it comes to manual transmissions ) and without the luxury to afford 2 cars a Thar with an autobox would be the perfect gift for people like me out there.

Re: Mahindra Thar 700 launched at Rs. 9.99 lakh

This is one emotional, as well as logical temptation. I really wish I could manage the finances at this point to get one. Sure the next gen Thar is in the pipeline. Its going to be a more mature offering, being tested in the real world using current test procedures. However, with this generation Thar, for many of us, the story started much before the thing was launched. Sure it wasn't the best, and although it improved on many usability aspects over the years, this being the ultimate, it will surely be missed big time, mainly because of the man who was responsible for giving us Indians a practical new offroader to play with. This is like the final going away of BD

Re: Mahindra Thar 700 launched at Rs. 9.99 lakh

What a way to avoid high discounts on last few units!

A perfect jugaad work of picking up what is available in existing part bin, change seat covers and paint combo and create few emotional ads to invoke 'Its a Jeep Thing'.
Honestly, they could have done better.

But new Thar looks damn good, i have seen it. its finally getting upgrades which creator of Thar once dreamt of.
Behram sir Cheers

Look at the sales numbers, 189 in April, news of the new Thar around the horizon, such obnoxious pricing as it is, I don't see why anyone should buy this, I mean, its beyond me. Adding some ABS and signature hardly makes this any more of a Thar than it is!

Let's see how it goes when the sales figures come in.
