Rumour: Maruti & Toyota developing Raize-based SUV for India

Toyota has just unveiled the Raize sub-4 meter SUV in Japan. Now, media reports suggest that Maruti and Toyota could develop separate SUVs for India based on the DNGA platform.

Rumour: Maruti & Toyota developing Raize-based SUV for India-raize.jpg

The Toyota Raize measures 3,995 mm in length. However, the report states that SUVs for India could be slightly longer. While Maruti and Toyota would share the same platform, both SUVs are likely to have different exteriors, but certain interior components could be shared between the two.

The Raize-based SUV could be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech and it could be mated with either a manual or automatic gearbox. However, there has been no official word regarding this yet.

The new SUVs from Maruti and Toyota are expected to compete with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Hector and the likes.

Re: Rumour: Maruti & Toyota developing Raize-based SUV for India

Is this going to slot between Brezza and the possible introduction of the Grand Vitara or is Maruti just using this platform to carpet bomb the CSUV segment?

Suzuki has done a good job of platform consolidation with the Hertact platform, adding this shared platform only increases costs in terms of the downward logistics and tooling.

Again this is a rumor and may not see the light of the day plus if there is one car maker that knows what they are doing in the Indian market, it is Suzuki.

Sorry, but to be pedantic, shouldn't that architecture be TNGA, since the Daihatsu Rocky (underpinned by DNGA) will essentially masquerade as Toyota's Raize in India (if they ever launch it here).

Being a sub-4m car, it is not likely to get slotted in the Creta/Seltos/Harrier territory. Brezza's current platform is not Heartect and it is unlikely that it'd happen (or even possible?) given the stringent safety norms (we know how poorly the Heartect cars performed in the GNCAP tests). TNGA might give MSIL the flexibility to base future CSUVs, including the next iteration of Brezza (who knows)

It is also said that it'll have AWD. Maruti and AWD? I don't get it...

Looks like a reworked version of the older Toyota Rush? But its high time Toyota bring in a product like that. It can also potentially boost the petrol variant product line, given that size can easily support the economics.

Re: Rumour: Maruti & Toyota developing Raize-based SUV for India

I don't see what value it will bring to Maruti by launching this. It pretty much looks like the Brezza. Basically the snazzy bits can simply be achieved as a mid-life face lift of the Brezza itself. Unless there is something absolutely unique that they can add in this car - like an AWD, I don't see the usefulness of bringing this car with a Suzuki badge.

But then, that logic applies to a lot of hatchbacks & an MPV that Maruti sells in same showroom & they sell a lot...So perhaps it would work for 2 SC-SUVs too...

Upcoming Maruti-Toyota Mid-Size SUV To Be Based On Toyota’s Platform, rivalling Hyundai's Creta and Kia's Seltos.

Quote:
the mid-size SUV will be underpinned by Toyota’s DNGA platform that can be found in Toyota Raize and Daihatsu Rocky. Despite similar underpinnings, the mid-size SUV will be developed by each brand pertaining to their requirements.
Quote:
In Maruti Suzuki’s domestic lineup, it will slot above the Vitara Brezza and the joint development could help in minimising costs and price the model competitively.
Quote:
Set to be produced at Toyota’s second plant in Bidadi, where the Yaris and Camry Hybrid are currently rolled out
Likely yo be launched in mid-2022.

This is the exact opposite of what other manufacturers typically do. They take their global products and cut it short to 4 metre. Toyota-Maruti on the other hand are taking a sub-4 metre vehicle and making it larger for Indian market. Would not be surprised if this was Maruti’s brainchild. They typically do what other’s don’t usually think of.

Not exactly, Škoda Auto India Pvt Ltd. upcoming SUV's are longer than their corresponding Global SUV's built on the same platform ( MQB-A0/MQN-A0-IN)

This is exactly how a platform works, that allows different models to be manufactured at the same plant, further saving cost.

Guess I got confused between extending the size of Raize for India market vs using the same platform for developing a bigger SUV. Thanks for highlighting.
