Rumour: 7-Seater Maruti SUV could debut in FY2020-21

According to a media report, Maruti Suzuki could launch a 7-seater SUV sometime in the next fiscal. The car could get Vitara branding.

The styling of the 7-seater Vitara could be based on the 5-seater version that in global markets. On the inside, it is likely to get three rows of seats. The car could be powered by BS6 compliant engines.

The 7-seater Maruti SUV is expected to compete with the Tata Gravitas, 6-seater MG Hector and the Mahindra XUV500.

More waiting :( Both the XUV500 and now this are scheduled for much much later. Tata it seems has got the timing just right.

Any segment below 12-14 lac, I wouldn't have bothered. Maruti can sell.

This one's going to be a real tough nut to crack. Seltos, Hector, 2020 Creta (also a rumored 7 seat version of the same and Seltos too), Harrier, Gravitas, XUV 500, XUV 300 7 seat.

The reason I've mentioned 5 seat cars here is because I really doubt the usage of the 3rd row in these Pseudo 7 seat - Pseudo SUVs.

Of course, unless they just slap the Toyota badge and get on with it

Maruti can sell Swift & DZires - but can never take on the well established Honda City, we said. But now we know that story.

Similarly, too early to write them off in the SUV game as well!

Suzuki has a capable history internationally with the Vitara XL7. All they would need is a proper package of price, looks, diesel engine, automatic gearbox, quality and features - and we never know what the end result could be! Given their usual localization, Maruti could even bring about a sub-segment below the established 20L price range of the current players and dodge a direct competition altogether.

Hope they do not cut corners with the safety aspects while they bring down the price.

Agreed. But the Ciaz came in fresh with only City as a major 'fresh' competitor. Verna up to some extent.

Almost all the 15 Lac + segment cars would be fresh come Oct-Dec 2020.

But yes, as you said, they could undercut all of them and try pulling in customers from both segments above and below.

That story started with SX4 "forcing" the City to upgrade on features & safety.

All Maruti needs to do is give an "SUV" body style to the Ertiga. The line between SUV & MPV sure has blurred, and the Ertiga itself is pretty competent on the road. Give it a different body shell and voila, here's your 7-seater SUV.

Toyota had a similar approach with the Innova & Fortuner which have so much in common. In fact, the last-gen Fortuner was panned for its "Innova like" interiors. Because it was a body-on-frame and at very different price points, the Fortuner got 4x4, a bigger engine etc. But I have a feeling Maruti can get away with a little less in the mass market monocoque segment.

There are a lot of people who want to upgrade from the Swift, i20 and Balenos. Giving them proper upgrade options is key to maintain the momentum. Creta and then Seltos captured that need correctly.

Well they slept and Koreans moved over and how quickly Kia has captured a good amount of customers from a segment lower and higher. Even worst with Toyota which has nothing to offer except innova and fortuner, both under threat.

With newer companies from China, it’s going to be even difficult for Maruti to maintain 50% market share. They could have easily had a grand Vitara in place of Seltos years ago but they were happy with Swift and Balenos.
