Fiat too wants to develop a low cost car for India

A lot of global automakers have expressed their desire to make a low cost model which could sell in big numbers in emerging markets like India and China.

The latest to join that list is Fiat. Fiat Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne has said in a statement that the company is currently considering building a low-cost car for Europe and Asian markets.

He said: “The car may have some roots in the Logan concept.”

Renault Logan has become a reference point for such a car. The company would be launching the Logan in India this year.

Marchionne added: “The issue is on the table, and how we develop that platform, where we make it, is being discussed now.” Interestingly, Fiat is already working on their Rs. 1 lakh car which is expected to be launched in the Indian market next year.

Let's see how things show up in th future. But there is already a competitor in the Logan segment, i.e., Tata Indigo. So if such a new car is indeed develop, wouldn't it lead to internal rivalry between Tata and Fiat??

Thats the car in question. They're also going to market that 1 lac car in Brazil

Fiat wont be doing any small car ventures in India by their own. It'll call for great A.S.S which is a stink they dont want to get into again

Especially after the failure of previous models they had come out with i dont think FIAT will venture in India by their own .. They will play it safe with TATA marketing it..

Latest reports suggest that Fiat also wants to provide low cost spares and excellent service backup. Fiat also wants to beat Maruti, Hyundai and everybody else to become the no. 1 player in the Indian market. Fiat also wants to continue to dream and dream and dream. hahahahahaha

the joke might well be on those of us who are writing of FIAT, or have been doing so for the last three years or so.

But FIAT, seems to be like this persistent fly that just won't buzz off.

They might yet turn around, and well.

Nothing wrong in dreaming actually. I once dreamt I'm the most handsome man in the world. That there's still some way to get there in real life doesnt perturb me.

You are quite right. There is nothing wrong in dreaming. Unfortunately, to make those dreams come true, Fiat needs to 'WAKE UP'. Unless of course, they are dreaming while being wide awake. Reminds me of an old serial 'Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne'

Gets me thinking are they going to launch the new palio in say 2010 when their value will be a Lac or so, since many people have seen testing going on and only testing going on and nothing else.

lot of word is being said about Fiat A.S.S here, but somehow an observation is that, some owners of Fiat cars that are not handled thru Tata-Fiat alliance are finding better A.S.S than they did 2 years ago. Maybe the low volumes but it is definitely better these days. Infact these Palio D and Petra owners are quite happy with their cars quality and the service provided. Not to mention the delight of using these cars (The petra 1.6, I mean)
