Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week : Used Mercedes E-Class W124

VOTED A BIG YES ! Infact I’m on my second one. Get yourself a good independent neighbourhood mechanic who knows his classic cars and the patience to love the car ! Keep the car regularly maintained and the w124 will not let you down

Is that your car Vikram ? WOWWWW. My most favourite car of all times, this and the W123. If you are in Bangalore, any chance I can have a look at it?

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week : Used Mercedes E-Class W124

Even though 124 is my first and only car, I voted NO, reason is simply you should have owned it by now. Support from MB is dwindling and even OE part quality is poor compared to few years back. If 124 is your dream car probably get it sooner than later, time is already up.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week : Used Mercedes E-Class W124

We own a 1997 124 Petrol Automatic. Lucky to find a clean car. I won't call it a niggle-free car but she visits the workshop only once a year.

I comfortably do Mumbai-Nasik-Mumbai in scorching heat with AC keeping the cabin chilled. The ride quality is still very comfortable.

There was an instance where I was doing 80 kph and saw the rumbler at the last moment. Nothing weird was felt inside. Full throttle it can from 0-100 in around 10 seconds. Since the engine is big, it never feels stressed out.

In the mountain pass, I switch it into 'S' mode and manage to overtake all the modern cars. It's not very involving to drive but everything is very predictable & composed.

The brakes are the best thing on the car and can stop without any drama at any speed.

Just drive carefully on speedhumps & potholes & the car will serve you nicely provided you perform fluid change regularly.

In Nasik, it turns heads wherever you go & there are people gathering around the car clicking photos. I think this is the best attention seeking car you can get in the 4-5L price bracket.

Only problem is you can't stop at smaller shops or restaurants with this car because their prices suddenly boom up

I would say no. Though I have grown up drooling over it. I still remember for hours watching in awe those single wipers in action from my hostel balcony when it rained/snowed. But as many others suggested, it's past it's best before date.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week : Used Mercedes E-Class W124

I've been wanting to refurbish this beat that has been lying with us for a couple years now. Lots of memories with this car, hence; never ended up selling it but would rather keep it restored and take it for a joyride every now and then. Any tips on where to look for genuine spare-parts ? I tried contacting dealerships in Jalandhar, Mohali, New Delhi but they all respond with the same statement that spare-parts don't seem to be available in our warehouse. Any help/guidance/tips as to where/who/how to locate parts would be highly appreciated !

Best,

FuzzySheikh

Your car simply looks majestic. Those straight lines in dark colour just looks something else.

Few weeks back I came across this fantastic video on W124 by Jason Cammisa on Hagerty. Since then, I am admiring it more. The sheer engineering that went into making cars by Japanese or Germans of that era is astonishing. Now I understand what is called as over engineering which is missing in these days as cost cutting has taken precedence.

Porsche's “Project 2758”

A superior touring car

Quote:
The two men still have fond memories of the 500 E to this day. “Thirty years ago, I drove to Lake Constance with three colleagues. We spent the entire trip talking to each other. At one point, one of them looked at the speedometer and had quite a shock when he realised the needle was showing 250 km/h. We had tuned the chassis, brakes and engine to perfection, which meant a superb driving experience was guaranteed,” recalls Hölscher. There were extensive discussions about the brakes at the time, the men remember. During the prototype phase, the team opted for more powerful brakes than those on the base vehicle to ensure optimum brake balance.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week : Used Mercedes E-Class W124

Been seeing this beautiful W124 in a gorgeous colour. Clearly owned by an enthusiast. What a timeless design, looks fabulous for a car that will be 3-decades old soon and for a model that was launched almost 4-decades ago .

Beautiful cars these W124’s. The best way to enter the world of ‘modern classics’. Trouble is the rubber and plastic parts do tend to deteriorate. Anecdotally even the scale models of these are becoming very hard to get.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the week : Used Mercedes E-Class W124

Voted “YES”!!
So.. supposedly there was a lesser spoken of model of the W124, the 300E with the smooth 6 cylinder engine and the automatic transmission.
Since it sold in such few numbers very few actually end up even knowing it exists.
One question haunts my mind, What are the sales numbers on them if anyone can genuinely help out!
Would absolutely love to own one example should i manage to get my hands on it.

The w124 is aptly a TANK, built to last generations as it clearly is! Supposedly over $1B was spent on making it and regardless, it shows in quality!

Appreciate the forums help in advance

Wow. Nice timing. I have two offers for my daily drive '96 W124 E250D, one of which I am happy with and said yes over the phone just before the Lockdown. Waiting now for the Covid-19 situation to be stable in MH to start with the paperwork and hand-over the car once I am back at Pune.

Its Great to see your Car, the W124 E 250 D. Mine is the same color? "Midnight Blue" Atleast looks identical in the pictures you posted. Its a E 300 D Manual from 1995 (CBU). Just restored fully. Will post pictures soon.
