Driving a new vehicle with temporary registration plates is deemed illegal, but what about the instance when the owner wants to purchase a number of his choice? In Haryana at least, the owner of a new vehicle pays the road tax at the dealer and then takes the documents to local RTO to get the number of his choice allocated by paying the extra fees depending upon the number which can range from Rs25k to multiple lakhs.

I read this today and from whatever I can make out is that the usual practice of pasting a sticker or a printout of temporary number will not be acceptable. You will need proper number plates. Temporary numbers are online now and raised for many reasons like getting a special number as you mentioned or getting car registered outside the state of the dealer.Most dealers do this already. Like this example






Another change is legality of numbers in regional language, these will be henceforth not valid.

As per my understanding this is how the current registration works.

1. All cars that come to the dealer needs to have a 'TC' number plate. This is mostly put for test drive cars. Example DL 01 TC 100. This needs to have white letters on a red background. Refer image below



2. Before a vehicle delivery, the dealer applies for Temporary number. This number has a validity of 30 days. Example DL 2020 TEMP 1000 AZ
This Temp number is valid for 30 days. During this period the owner can drive the vehicle but the vehicle needs to have the Temp number displayed. This is where most of the dealers put a paper and write the temp number with a sketch pen. In most cases after few days the paper peels off or after a rain the letters will go off. So anyone driving without a visible temp number plate can face legal actions. It is always better to get the temp number to be made as a proper plate or as a vinyl sticker and stuck to the car. This needs to have red letters on a yellow background. Please refer the image below.


This is where most dealers would put just 'For Regn' or 'Registered' sticker and deliver the vehicles. Which is completely illegal. Also the temp number needs to be displayed in a proper way.

3. Within 30 days of validity of the Temp number, the owner gets a Permanent number and this will be a HSRP supplied by the dealer. In most cases, the owner needs to rivet the HSRP in the car and send a photo to the concerned RTO, after which only the RC will be sent to the owner.

Here in Telangana, here's how it is: -

When the cars reach the dealership yard, they come with stickers bearing number with 'TC' in them.

Prior to delivery, over the road tax is paid by the dealership, a temporary registration number is issued to that vehicle which reads "TS 08 CB T/R 5555" (part in bold is written using a marker, rest part is printed by the dealership). This temporary number is written using a permanent marker on the vehicle. Then the delivery happens.



Some manufacturers like Skoda, Mercedes, Audi name proper plates bearing the temporary registration number which is with a yellow background and numbers in red.

The owner is given a time frame of 30 days from the date of delivery to get the vehicle registered and have the HSRP fixed on the vehicle.

I am a bit worried. I got a Rapid Rider a week ago (in delhi). The car has temporary registration written on a piece of paper. I am facing some delay in getting the permanent registration number. Although the car is parked inside my house and I rarely drive it, either early mornings or late night.

Will I face any issue if I drive to my dealership (in Noida) for the number plate (from Delhi) in a week's time ?

Like you mentioned it’s been a week since purchase and you are having trouble in procuring the permanent registration, I would suggest you get a number plate with the temporary registration affixed till you receive the HSRP plates. That should be good for the next three weeks since the validity of temporary number is a month.

I just made another post about our Byzantine bureaucratic rules, only to come across this! We just bought a new car here in Ahmedabad and, according to the dealer, the permanent number will be assigned in a week. We have been given a temporary number for the time-being. If I am reading this correctly, one now has to get a special number plate made (yellow letters with a red background) for the week/ten day period between the purchase of a new vehicle and the allotment of a permanent number. What a waste of time and a ridiculous hoop to make people jump through. Not to mention especially fun in the time of COVID!

Not a big deal. Go to your neighborhood vinyl sticker shop and get it for 200 bucks. Make sure the size, font size &:color are same.

It's actually a good step (both short & long term) as many people are currently wandering around in new cars with no number plates. For example, most RTOs in BLR have run out of the HSRP plate stock. I got my plates after nearly 6 weeks.

I checked with multiple dealers here in North and no one has a cue. Dealerships are still delivering cars with white plates as past.

Folks, Help! The new dealer says the temporary registration request is in the RTO and will be completed on Monday but I can take delivery tomorrow.

I plan to take the car from the showroom in Delhi to my home in ghaziabad. Should I go ahead and take delivery tomorrow or not?

A month back, took delivery of my new i20. My number came 3 days later. I didn't face any issue driving around till then. After 3 days, just printed number on a paper and stick on windshield. After 6 days, number plate came and was installed.
M in Bangalore and didn't face any issue.
