Ford India applies for "Lincoln" trademark. Why?

Ford Motor Company has applied for the Lincoln trademark in India, hinting at the possible launch of the American luxury vehicle brand.

While the brand’s cars are sold in China and South Korea in the Asian region, seldom would have one expected them to possibly land on Indian shores. However, the Lincoln India trademark application has made that possibility more probable.

Glad to see Ford making effort even after JV with M&M. On a side note, yet an another brand to be related to Mahindra.

All those rich and image conscious politicians and movie stars will queue up to buy those extra large and luxurious Lincoln sedan (Continental) and SUVs (Navigator & Aviator).

I initially thought GM would bring Cadillac to India, but unfortunately it shut shop in India twice with Opel and Chevrolet.

Good to see Ford continuing its belief in the Indian car market. Hope they launch the brand here soon. I'm sure they'll go the CBU route, with that 2500 vehicle import provision.

Our current luxury market is dominated by the Germans of course. Lexus tried to enter it and bring some differentiation in the form of hybrids, but in vain. It will be good to have another brand giving their own take to the segment.

I'd say Lincoln has a good chance at selling the typical big burly American SUV. Our netas would will queue up for them, to upgrade from their Fortuners.

It will be interesting to see what vehicles (SUVs) they bring here since they are stopping the manufacture of the cars in 2020. I would love to see their entire line up here.

re: Ford India applies for "Lincoln" trademark. Why?

Unless Lincoln has recently decided to start manufacturing right hand drive (RHD) vehicles, I don't see them coming to India.

Lincoln is not present in any large RHD market around the world - UK, Australia, South Africa, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia.

Some of these RHD markets do allow the importation of LHD cars and operation of LHD cars on their roads is also legal, in some cases. However, that is not the case in India.

Also, there are specialist importers in some of these RHD countries, who convert LHD vehicles to RHD.

Quoting from a 2019 article in the Australian internet press :

Quote:
"At present the Lincoln brand sells vehicles in North America, the Middle East, and China.

Joy Falotico, President of Lincoln, told CarAdvice, "We're happy where we're at, and where we're represented around the world".

She also ruled out adding right-hand drive production to the company's range of vehicles, making exports to the UK, South Africa and other right-hook markets unlikely.

Naah, I think it's more as a precautionary measure & to prevent anyone else from using the trademark.

As FourWheelDrift stated, going big on RHD markets isn't part of Lincoln's plan, while Ford itself is easing off investments in India. Less than 1% chance of Lincoln coming to India.
