Ssangyong has released a couple of teaser images of the updated Rexton G4. The SUV will be officially revealed on November 4, 2020.



The 2021 Rexton G4 gets a redesigned front fascia with a new octagonal grille and redesigned headlamp clusters. The front bumpers have also been updated. At the rear, the SUV gets T-shaped tail lamps and Rexton lettering on the tail gate.

The updated Rexton G4 is likely to retain its 2.2-litre diesel engine that puts out 184 BHP and 422 Nm. Moreover, rumours suggest that it might also get a turbo-petrol engine from Mahindra's mStallion range.



In India, the Mahindra Alturas G4 was introduced in November 2018. It competes with the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and the MG Gloster. The updated version is unlikely to be launched in India anytime soon.

This update looks very MG Hector-ish.

I personally like the current generation's looks. Butch yet kinda regal, more so in black, and with the Mahindra grille.

The teaser image looks like an outcome of a pileup involving the following cars -

• Skoda Karoq
• MG Gloster
• Current Alturas

The grill is plugged right off the Gloster! Almost every manufacturer is copying one another these days there is no new design language in the industry. No wonder cars start looking boring in a few years!

I feel Ssangyong is one company which does not have any specific design language. Every iteration and every car has a different design not corelating to each other. Mahindra having Pininfarina in their arsenal, they should have come up with much better(quirky) design rather than imitating existing cars in the market.

Also, since Ssangyong is up for grabs, Mahindra may have decided not to invest their energies on the brand and the result is the above pictures.

Anyways, one boring design which does not stand out, nor which would excite anyone.

Well there's only so much that you can do to a grille with basic geometric shapes like hexagon and octagon and hence we should not really complain about it. Audi, Datsun, MG, this one and more such brands.

Design is an inspired art. Otherwise manufacturers will have to go all out like Lexus and Hyundai grilles which look totally different and more like random shape later refined to make a design.

The LED on top and headlamps below it will be commonplace and in the future with no or faux grilles we may see a random shapes headlamp as the only differentiating factor.

In short, this one looks good. The massive grille is what gives it a character over the current version. Also, the MG grille is more tapered at the bottom while this one is at the top.

But why is it said that Mahindra won't be introducing this in India ? What's so difficult when you are already selling it as a CKD unit ?

Front end looks very Chinese and rear end looks like it's inspired from the Hyundai Santa-Fe especially the details inside the taillight.

Today I saw an Alturas G4 and I was thinking that it had every chance to be the MG Gloster - and blew it.

Alturas grill is now looking very ordinary, very much like everything else.

My eyes are getting tired of Trapezoid, why everything has to have a pronounced trapezoid?

Instrument cluster? Trapezoid.

Grill? Trapezoid. Even Audi gave up the smooth curves of it grill for sharp Trapezoid, BMW`s kidney grill is also now two trapezoids.

Hyundai, Ford, genesis, Toyota - just about every major brand now wears a massive trapezoid up front. Why?

2021 Ssangyong Rexton unveiled

Ssangyong has taken the wraps off the 2021 Rexton for the global market. The SUV has been given a mid-life refresh.



The updated Rexton has been given a bold new grille that has a chrome frame and is flanked by 4-pod LED headlamps. It gets redesigned front and rear bumpers and reworked LED tail lights.



The interior layout hasn't changed much. It features a new 4-spoke steering wheel, a digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment head-unit that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The SUV is also equipped with 2-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, 360-degree camera, electronic tailgate and 9 airbags.



The updated Rexton G4 is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine. The power output has gone up from 178 BHP to 199 BHP, while torque has been raised from 420 Nm to 439 Nm. The engine is mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission.

If you look at the side profile. The stretched rear looks downright ugly to me. Maybe a smaller window there could have helped. The Alturas had the same aesthetic issue as well.

For a second I thought it was an MG! Interiors ( all black one and not the chocolate black) looks good. Let's wait for the "in flesh" look. I am actively considering this as a replacement of XUV, at around the end of 2021, provided the unveiling date is maintained,

It may not come to India as Mahindra wants to get rid of Ssyangyong brand. They have already stopped the production of current Rexton/Alturas G4
