Recently we have seen a lot new engine coming in our markets. But somehow IMO the old engines which we enthusiasts loved driving/revving are no longer there.
Back in those days, engines were classified to be the heart of the car which these days has shifted to the features offered.
My purpose of creating this thread is to ask all my fellow BHPians, "Which is your favorite engine and what is the reason behind it?"
I would start this one by giving my opinion,
My favorite engine was the classic E-Class engine (E300 D W124)
Got a chance to drive it and boy it was such a great engine, recently I was reading a review by BHPian mayurhuria about the same car and immediately it grabbed my attention.
The link for his wonderful car and review can be found
here
It was a 6 cylinder engine with 140 HP on the tap and trust me that 140 HP was a lot more than adequate during that time.
Verdict : I can never forget the drive of that engine and I am sure no other engine would be able to dethrone this one. Please share your inputs and choices too.
Thanks.
Note for mods - Couldn't find a similar thread so I created a new one. Please merge with a similar thread if needed.
My all time favourite engine is the 2.0 TDI from VAG. There was surely some wizardry involved in the creation of that engine, a marvelous piece of engineering. It can be sporty, fuel efficient and refined at the same time. No matter what the state of tune or gearbox to which it is mated, it's a pleasure to drive. In fact, diesel engines from any other brands seem very cluttery and unrefined after driving this (even diesel engines from other luxury car makers).
It's sad that they aren't being offered in India anymore.
My favourite would be the Fiat 1.3 MJD, the national engine of India till about a couple of years back. The mass market appeal was too great for this iconic fire breathing piece of metal! lol:
It was practical, fuel efficient, but could be also be tuned for sporty performance. The sheer number of cars (24) it powered is not funny, just to name a few:
1. Maruti: Swift, Dzire, Ciaz, Ertiga...well everything
2. Chevy: Sail, Beat, Enjoy
3. Fiat: Punto, Linea and their variants
Mine would be the 1.3MJD in Maruti's state of tune. Nice acceleration, overall good performance, great mileage and easy to maintain. What more could we ask :)
On motorcycles, its the Duke 200's rev happy little motor.
Of the cars I've driven extensively, it has to be the 1KD-FTV which powered the previous-gen Fortuner. Oodles of Torque, great power, decent FE, and low maintenance. Let us just say that NVH wasn't the strong point of this engine. Ther Germans might get the same power & torque from a smaller engine, but try driving a German car trouble free for 500k km. lol:
I haven't driven or experienced (but read a lot about on forums or seen a lot of youtube videos) two of my other favorites:
1. The 1HZ - a very basic I-6 NA diesel that can go on F-O-R-E-V-E-R as proven by multiple high-mileage LCs & Toyota Coasters in Africa & Australia.
2. The 1VD-FTV - Toyotas only V8 diesel powering the Land cruiser aka the Land Barge.
Now you know where I got the inspiration for my forum handle. lol:
An honorable mention to the Suzuki G13BB, the engine that created some awesome cars in India. :)

Man, you missed Tata.
The 1.3 MJD will be one of the most favourite engine of mine for a long time to come. The first gen swift had the most aggressive tune for the engine with the turbo kicking in at 2000 rpm bringing wide grin to our faces. :D
A fast , frugal and efficient engine worked wonders for the mass market while keeping the enthusiasts equally happy. A simple remap and the car would be a rocket at that time.
Pity that the new norms have killed the engine but its definitely a excellent piece of engineering.
For me, it is the 2.0 TDi present in the Jetta MK6. The way it sounds, the way it pulls, it is addictive and brings a smile to my face every time I drive it. Come on VAG, atleast the 2.0 and above diesels ought to be back and they should be offered starting from the Octavia and above.
My favourite would be the Ford diesel 1.5 TDCi which is still in the vogue with the BS6 norms kicking in. It is enjoyable to drive, especially in the smaller cars like the Figo, Aspire and Freestyle. I just wish that they provided a 6th gear in the Ecosport with this engine for smoother highway cruising.
I would say the 1.6 Litre Rocam engine of the Ford iKON was a great engine.
Even though it produced around 90-95 ps of power but boy what an engine it was to drive in that car. clap:
It was a complete package great handling with great power.
Also the 1.5 litre VGT Diesel engine of the 1st Gen Verna was a great one.
The Verna felt like a rocket with that engine.
Of the cars I have driven, the 1.6 ROCAM on my dad's Ford Ikon is my personal favourite. On a motorcycle, the engine on my Interceptor 650 for sure.
Well, I'd say it will depend on the drive.
- For straight endless highways, I'd prefer a torquey diesel.
- For Ghats, I'd prefer a high revving NA petrol for that excellent throttle response.
- For quick in town drives, I'd prefer a petrol with good low end.
- For off-roading, I'd prefer something with huge low end torque, good compression ratio, excellent throttle response and good revvability.
I liked the 1.8 TSi, mated with a manual GB in the Laura. It was a heavily modified car, putting out around 325 hp. ToT was working on it back then, when I got my Fiesta remapped by them.
My Fiesta 1.5 TDCi came with a humble 90hp tune, no turbo lag. Got it remapped, not sure how many HPs it puts out now but it's enough to compliment thay terrific chassis and steering.
Suzuki G16B
Fantastic motor with an excellent low end torque. Powers the Baleno that I still drive. I am still to find an engine in the modern similar segment cars with such a punchier engine.
The 1.5 litre iVTEC petrol engine on the Honda City is my favorite.
My third generation Honda City is mated to the torque converter, and it has always been a pleasure to drive.
I have never felt the engine out of breath, be it on straight line highways, or over winding ghat roads. A great combination of power delivery and refinement.
Turbo Diesel- 1.3 MJD
Turbo Petrol - 1.4 Tjet
NA Petrol - Any NA of Honda's, then Suzuki's.
