Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

Nice Thread reminding all of us of the cars and memories we had!

Our family tends not to dispose of cars, except for one till now

1. Maruti 800 - 2005 - 2008
2. Santro Xing - 2008 - Till Now
3. Honda City 3rd Gen - 2012 - Till Now
4. Innova Crysta 2.4V Diesel - 2017 - Till Now
5. Creta 1st Gen Diesel - 2018 - Till Now

As the driving members of the family started growing so did the cars. Having cars across segments gives us versatililty in picking the car for the occasion of the family members need

The progression is rather sequential but sustained

I still love driving the Santro, the limited power gives me the feeling of driving a toy car with immense control

City is my personal favourite for enthusiastic driving and Innova for highway cruising

After owning a couple of diesel cars, I am a fan of the diesels Torquey pull though

Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

Great thread!

While I don't think there's anything wrong with jumping multiple segments at once, I personally think that it's a good idea to go one segment at a time. This gives room for appreciating each incremental feature or attention to detail that you get one segment above your previous car.

But of course, this is only one of the many factors involved in buying a car, so there can certainly be other things that favour the car from multiple segments higher that override this factor.

Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

Nice thread topic, welcome to t-BHP!

Even though I had changed 3 cars in the last 4 years ( 2 used - 6 months each & a new car for last 3 years), the jump in terms of luxury was not that significant. I am 26 for now, bought my 1st car at 22.

2017 - Used Hyundai Accent (Verna)
2018 - Used Nissan Sunny
2018 (July) - till date: New Changan EADO

While my first two cars belonged to the C segment, EADO was a D segment sedan.

I wish to make a jump to the luxury segment at least once in a life.

Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

Nice thread to share about the good old memories and the present experiences.

2007: Alto - Over 40K KMs; Couple of long drives; The times we spent with the Brilliant Yellow Car is unforgettable!

2012: SX4 (Pearl White) Diesel; 90K KMs - Sporty & a Fun Car to drive on Highways! Uncountable long drives! Addiction to the Fiat engine never stops!

2018: Elantra - Enjoying each Mile behind the Wheel.

It was a steady progression in our case; From a Hatch to a Sedan to the D-segment.

Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

Looking back, I have been through quite a wide & enjoyable spectrum.

2 wheelers - A TVS moped to Bajaj Sunny to Suzuki Shogun to Hero Honda Splendor (when it just came out). But that was the end of that line for certain reasons, but it was a hell of a lot of fun, while it lasted.

Cars - From a used Maruti 800 Dx (the first model), to Nano, to a 911 (& many others in between - all listed in my signature below) & eyeing a Gallardo or Huracan (depending on certain Vitamin M factor & other responsibilities of life like a Home loan to pay up).

Every car that I have owned has been a great experience at that time, though now, I wonder how I liked a few of them at the time - lack of choice, knowledge/exposure & obviously Vitamin M

Additionally, with age, the preference & priorities have been changing. Just concentrating on getting my bucket list done for now

Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

In my family, we have gone from Maruti 800 during mid 90s to Tata Indica at the turn of the century to the WagonR in 2003 and now to the S-Cross in 2018.

While my brother (very close cousin) went from WagonR (3 cylinder) to 4th Gen Honda City to the mighty Tata Hexa in 2019.

Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

Interesting thread!
Maruti 800 - 1995 - 2001
Ford Ikon - 2001 - 2009
Scorpio - 2009 - 2011 (Moved to Singapore)
Toyota Altis - 2011 - 2018 (in Singapore - cost us 120k SGD including COE = approx 6o lakhs INR!)
Honda Accord 3.6 V6 (in New York) - 2018
Skoda Superb and Endevour - 2019 - till date (Bangalore)

Not sure if this qualifies as 'jumping' but had a fair share of various types based on our needs.
As we grow older, maybe time to downsize to something more manageable?

Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

I've 'jumped' a segment down. After my Cruze hit 10 years (thanks NGT), I got a Honda City.

With speed cameras being installed everywhere in Delhi/Gurgaon and the low speed limits, getting a fast car wasn't much of a factor for me anymore. Plus, I decided to prioritize paying off my home loan before thinking of anything more expensive.

Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

My Family’s Upgrades have been in line with segments except the first one

2009-2018 - WagonR VXI
2015-2020 - VW Vento TDI AT
2018- Now - Hyundai Creta Diesel AT
2020 - Now - Skoda Karoq

I jumped segments in two wheelers though

2013-2018 - Honda Activa
2019-2020 - Harley Davidson Roadster 1200CX

We owned others cars abroad too like a Kia, a ford pickup, a toyota Noah, and currently a Hyundai Santa Fe. But, those were all company cars given to my dad neither of which we bought.

Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

Interesting topic..
I started with an i10, then upgraded to a Skoda Rapid. And then downgraded to an S-Cross(Have to call this a downgrade, as I regretted buying it after the Rapid ). And then I upgraded to a 320D, went the used route for the first time, as well.

Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

Mine was a progressive update if you see the line up

Maruti 1000 - Alto - Ritz - Punto - Ecosport - Harrier.

The only space where I would have skipped a segment is with my current upgrade. Logically it should have been a Seltos or Creta in terms of features and size but chose to get Harrier.

Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

I have never jumped segments.

For me segments don't matter. What matters is the driver’s satisfaction while driving and as an owner. Be it an Alto or an Aventedor. Its been 23 years since I learnt driving and almost 18 years since I have been actively driving. The kind of change in traffic density in these years makes me feel that 4-4.3m long cars are the way to go.

I love cars and care for them throughout the ownership. My first personal car was a 2010 Fiat Grande Punto MJD Emotion Pack. I kept it for 10 years and drove it for 1,30,000Km and it is now with my parents after I recently upgraded to S-Cross 1.5 Petrol.

Being a middle class person, I had an ‘aspiration’ to buy TATA Hexa (post GST price bonanza in 2017) or a TATA Harrier 2020. Had almost finalised the loan process for a Hexa back in 2017 but backed out at the last minute due to the huge loan amount. Thought about going for a Harrier 2020 at one point. Again the prospect of taking a huge loan made me go realistic. If I have to be honest, I wanted a Harrier mainly because of its road presence/looks for show off/status rather than utility, being a single person.

Secondly, I have a very paradoxical behaviour as a car enthusiast. What I observed is that once a car gets 3-4 years old, that special bonding starts to go down more rapidly (should not be the case for an enthusiast they say). New models and technology come up in the meanwhile and a new car definitely drives better than an older car regardless of how well it is maintained. If I can find an equally comfortable car for half the price, it can allow me to upgrade much quicker if I want to.

My friend bought a Hyundai i10 Sportz petrol in 2017 and driving it in Jodhpur’s city traffic was much more enjoyable than my 7 year old Punto.

I intend to keep S-Cross for a decade plus as well. I don't see a 45 year old me jump segments in 2030 either.

Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

Mine is more or less like a typical journey progressing from scooter --> bike --> car :

1999 : Bajaj Bravo scooter after school i.e. engineering coaching time. I still remember the wind in my face when i crossed 80kmph on it for the first time.

2008 : RE Thunderbird : Typical bachelorhood days after college and had fun driving it. I still have it parked in my garage and drive it occasionally as the fun & charm of driving a bike is completely different from a car. ODO reading 17K only.

2010 : Ritz ZXI : It is 10 years old but similar to my bike, only 31K on ODO. Longest drive ever is around 550km in a day from Bangalore to Udupi. In excellent condition & can easily go 5 more years but want to upgrade now to experience more.

2021 : Currently shortlisting my upgrade around 20L OTR as 5 seater is more than sufficient for my family and my running is not that much. Looking at options like Kushaq, Taigun, Harrier and waiting for Harrier petrol as well.

Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

Was very judicious in not over running budget (cheap & cheerful to buy & run) when I bought my first car, didn’t stretch to buy a more expensive to buy upfront Swift/Etios, even though I was tempted. Later was Remorseful that I could have a much better car for comparatively lesser additional money, which would eventually translate to lesser urge to upgrade. Threw caution to the wind this time and Jumped a lot of segments.

First car was a Chevy Beat Diesel LT(O) (2011), sold it and was on the market for an upgrade in 2017. I kid you not, I went from wanting to upgrade to a new Baleno RS (too plasticky) —> Ciaz (no good AT), City (not spacious enough back seat) —> Corolla Altis VL AT (peace of mind in ownership vs fun to drive Octavia, was sure could not have financed repairs after stretching 3 segments). I literally didn’t even test drive an Octavia till I’d already booked a Corolla, coz I would be tempted to spend a little more.

Re: Hyundai i10 to Polo GT to Audi A3 | How many segments did you jump when upgrading your car?

2021: I "jumped" from a Bajaj Dominar to Kawasaki Versys 1000
Reason - I plan to keep the Versys with me for long, hence depreciation factor doesn't affect me much, and I really wanted to own an I4 with touring credentials
