Tata Altroz sets a record; covers 1,603 km in 24 hours

The Tata Altroz has entered the India Book of Record after covering the longest distance ever recorded by a passenger car in 24 hours.

Pune-based Mr. Devjeet Saha completed a round trip from Satara to Bangalore and back to Pune between December 15 and 16, 2020. The total distance covered was 1,603 km.

Tata Motors launched the Altroz i-Turbo last month. The new variant is powered by a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine that produces 109 BHP and 140 Nm. It is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.

The Altroz is also available with a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine that makes 85 BHP and 113 Nm and a 1.5-litre diesel that puts out 89 BHP and 200 Nm.

Re: Tata Altroz sets a record; covers 1,603 km in 24 hours

Not to ruin anyone’s parade but honestly, 1600km in 24 hours on modern highways doesn’t sound a big deal. I have done many Delhi Mumbai runs over the past decade, approx 1400km, and it always took 20-22 hours. I am sure there will be many members here who have done longer stints on their trips. A senior BHPian drove non stop from Mumbai to Pokhra(Nepal) in his Fortuner. Just that, it was always a personal achievement and not an attempt at any record.

If someone wants to set a distance record on public roads, they are welcome to lap the peripheral expressway around Delhi for 24 hours straight. With cruise control engaged at the 120kmph speed limit all the time, you can theoretically cover over 2800km without breaking any laws.

Re: Tata Altroz sets a record; covers 1,603 km in 24 hours

I understand the difficulty and endurance of both man and the machine. But I don't understand the purpose and motive of these records! What is achieved here and the point made by this? This is not like the Le Mans or Daytona 24 where there is something done to prove the endurance of prototypes or cars within a controlled environment.

If there was a dire need then I think we can understand travelling 1600 kms in a day risking lives on the road.

P.S - I am not going after the person, just the motive and purpose.

Agreed.

For the record, I had to do Bangalore-Hyderabad-Vishakapatnam in one go, due to the Covid situation. Took me 19 hrs. for 1246 kms including a driving time of 17+ hrs.

The roads were not good in 30% of the trip. Had they been better, I believe the coverage would have been better.

Wait, isn't D-BHPian Paragsachania in the book of records?

He's the champ of long drives amongst us BHPians.

True. Very surprised by this record!

1600kms in 24 hours is a very common challenge in the motorcycle world. A younger, naive me had an unofficial run on my motorcycle with 1603.3 (odo) kms completed in 23 hours 31 minutes.

Guys, Don't get mislead by the 'India Book of Record' scheme. Anybody can get these by paying a fee to them online (last I check it was approx Rs. 7500). There is absolutely no verification & there is no Book keeping records.

Sorry but this is a ridiculous piece of masala information to be catalogued into Team BHP News.

Thank you!

For that matter, I have done Mumbai - Chennai (~1400 kms) non-stop under 22 hours with two growling and shouting cats for company - that should count for some kind of record too!

That 7500inr fee might not be bad if I get similar fanfare from auto forums like ours

True! D-BHPian paragsachania definitely must have done more than 1200km in a day.
Another contender is D-BHPian laluks who cheekily suggests Bangalore-Khajuraho-Bangalore as a weekend getaway (link (Kungfu Panda (Sr.) Chronicles : Khajuraho, (Possible) Weekend Getaway from Bangalore))

'India Book of Records' got me for sure, and then I saw PapaBravo's post above

Jokes aside, these records are ridiculous since I know of many who had done even better then the record mentioned above. I am sure, some folks from Calcutta would have their share of good laugh over this news. Surprised that this news found a pride of place in this forum !!

Where is SS-Traveller when you need him ?

Re: Tata Altroz sets a record; covers 1,603 km in 24 hours

At first I thought someone did this on one tankful till I read the full post.

I have on multiple occasions covered more than 1500 Km in under 24 hours and then in early 2016, I did 1709 Km run from Bangalore to Rajkot in one go, without much ado and that too in under 24 hours much more peacefully with good number of breaks. I also stuck to my typical highway cruising speeds between 100-120 all the times. I also crossed major cities of Pune, Mumbai and Ahmedabad during this trip.

The same drive on return, this time with my Sr. Citizen parents and a short detour and it took me an extra 3 hours due to the fact that we crossed few cities at peak times:

This one is just one from many such planned and few impromptu drives.

LOL no. I seldom drive for records. I can still say I drive to record a drive like the one above, for the sheer pleasure and love of driving.

I would like to say that there is a lot of difference when you drive for a record, take the same route back after that U Turn vs driving to a destination with no specific target on mind. The results might be better with the latter because your body and mind are in total control while they may not be when you are actually racing against time.

Not to brag, our SCross did Chennai, TN to Dabra, MP in 24.xx hours (for sure not 25 hours) which is when we stopped at Suraj Hotel for Lunner (lunch + dinner). I'm positive it should be over 1700 Km. We did out of compulsion to reach Agra rather than racing against time.

Re: Tata Altroz sets a record; covers 1,603 km in 24 hours

Note from Moderator
  • Assuming that Mr Devjeet Saha was the only driver. Driving for 24hrs non stop is dangerous
  • Assuming that Mr Devjeet Saha got 6 hours sleep in this period, his average speed was 90km/h. Knowing the roads beyond Maharastra and the roadworks around Hubli, it can be assumed a lot of high speed driving while fatigued happened.

Even the Cannonball Run which is illegal have 2-3 drivers on much safer roads
