Thanks to the step by step process on various posts with regards to the FC renewal in this thread.
I got my FC renewed last week at kasthurinagar RTO (KA03) for my swift dezire LDi. I applied through the vahan portal and payed the fee online (Rs.7062 ) for FC renewal and address change. Took the print out and went for the inspection.
At the RTO went to second floor superintendent counter and got the verification and signature. (note: need a printed file / tag & specific size cloth envelope we can buy from the shop opposite to front gate).
Go to 3rd main road by 12:00 pm and wait for the inspector to come and inspect the vehicle.
In my case the vehicle was in in perfect condition and he caught hold of the rims. I had a std size alloy (neo) with std tyres (14 R 185 ). He rejected the car and gave me the reason- alloy was not part of LDi variant and asked to get steel rims. I was lucky that the original steel rims was available. so came home replaced the rims and took it for inspection again the very next day.
This time inspector asked me to start the car and move it to the front and then asked me to meet him at inspectors room on second floor.
We waited till 1:45 and the inspector came and signed the forms. By the time the application collector had gone for lunch and had to wait. At 2:30 pm the counter was opened and I submitted the file to get an acknowledgment on the fee receipt.
Over all it took close to 8 hours to complete the process which shouldn't have taken more than 1 hour. Close to 20 vehicles where there and most where through agents and i sincerely hope this will change in future and the RTA work will also be outsourced to pvt sector like passport offices.
Has anyone renewed their vehicle registration at KA51 RTO recently? Wanted to know if there any preferred day for inspection.

Does anyone hear know how to transfer the registration name of an expired scooter to my father's or my name? I'll elaborate my situation further. My father had bought a LML Vespa Select Two from a guy sometme around 1998 or early 2000. Now, since he had mainly intented to use the scooter for his medical practice back in his village , he had not gotten the registration transferred to his name. Later he had brought the scooter to Kolkata for his medical practice here and ease of visiting hospitals where his patients were admitted. Sometimes in early 2005, he parked the scooter in my grandfather's house. Long story short, it hasn't moved from there ever since. Now ,I decided to get the scooter restored, since it was my father's first vehicle. But to make it road legal, I'll need to renew the registration, which is still on the name of the original owner. The vehicle was registered in Hooghly RTO of West Bengal. Now can anyone here help me by stating how I can get the name of registration changed ?
And no, contacting the original owner is not an option. Not that the original owner isn't alive, but I don't think he'll entertain such requests now ,after so many years . So fellow members please help. |
It's been a long time since I had posted this. Can anyone please shed some light on this matter ?

It is not possible. Renewal of registration will require the signatures and documents of the registered owner, only then you can transfer the ownership.
I suggest you do not go ahead with this project.
Anyone has any idea about this ?
I have a car which is Mumbai registered (MH02) now I have permanently moved to Pune, is it possible to renew registration of my old car in the Pune RTO or will I have to get it done only in the Mumbai RTO ?

Hello guys.
====. If the penalty is actually compounded monthly, it would be huge, so any clarification would be very helpful indeed before I go ahead and bought an older vehicle. |
Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on the penality for late fitness please. Whilst I have read Rs 300 per month, some members have previously stated they were only charged 300 in total regardless of the delay.

Why would you renew registration for a move within a state?

Because it will be over 15 years.

If you have updated your address on the RC to Pune address, you have to apply for renewal at the Pune RTO.
Hello,
Does anyone know what the approximate charges for green tax and renewal of registration would be for a Mitsubishi outlander? My car is a 2009 registered car that I bought second hand in 2013.
I unfortunately didn't't realise that my registration expired in jan of this year.
The agent is telling me since the outlander is considered as an import, the renewal and green tax amount is crazy expensive.
He's saying close to 50k.
Is that true?
Would appreciate if some one could help me with some info.

Update: Got my RC renewal done and I've received the updated RC as well by India Post.
I'll answer my questions from the previous post if it helps anyone.

However, now I am getting quoted (what seems to me) exorbitant charges by the agents for the RC renewal. The couple of folks I enquired with quoted charges in the range of around 18.5k (including the RTO charges).
Hence, Question #1: Are these charges worth it? |
Answer: The charges are not worth it if you can set aside half a day from your schedule and go to the RTO to get the job done. Make sure that you keep your schedule flexible for the usual government office pillar-to-post runs. However, the job will get done if your paperwork is straightforward and in order - meaning that your PUC is valid, the RC hasn't expired yet, insurance is current etc. Since my paperwork was in order, I had no issues.

Question #2: What exactly would be the RTO charges for this RC renewal? |
Answer: Final bill = Rs 6,720.00 only.
You can check my previous post to understand how this number was arrived at.

Question #3: What I do not understand is the first field in the Tax Details panel as shown below. What is this for and what is the correct value to be input here? |
Answer: 1.
I still don't know the rationale behind this magic number, but it worked for me.

Question #4: How do I figure out which RTO I would have to approach to get this work done, especially the eventual inspection?
KA03 (from my car’s registration) indicates the Indiranagar RTO.
However, for the 15th-year renewal, I had to go the the Jayanagar RTO for inspection! Presumably, because the car was originally registered in Bengaluru South RTO by the previous owner. |
Answer: I went to the Jayanagar RTO and there was no fuss.

Question #5: Am I on the right track in case I want to go ahead with the registration renewal by myself? |
Answer: A resounding yes!
All of the above details are regarding the online part of this journey.
Part 2 of this journey is in offline mode at the RTO.
Here's my experience at the Bengaluru South, Jayanagar RTO:
- I already had the documents to be submitted arranged in a folder in the way that they prefer it. You can get this folder downstairs at a shop. It costs 20 rupees. The original RC has to be put in the zip-lock pouch and tied to the folder as shown.

- I ensured that I reached the RTO office sharply at the opening time (10 AM).
- There was an officer sitting at a desk immediately upon entry. Speak with them politely, state your purpose and show them the documents. They will quickly check and if everything is in order they will direct you to the correct counter number to line up at. If you need to make any corrections, they will tell you that as well.
They will speak mainly in Kannada, and a bit of English (broken Hindi too, if you're lucky!). Take along a Kannada-speaking friend if you can. I went by myself and managed with my rudimentary Kannada skills. Again, since my documents were in order, the interaction was minimal. There were other Kannada speakers nearby who I saw helping out non-Kannada speakers very kindly. Being polite is the mantra.
- An officer at the counter checked my documents and put a date and their signature. They asked me to write down my phone number on the form with a pen, which I duly did at the counter.
- Then I was asked to go to the parking lot upstairs and wait for the RTO Vehicle Inspector to show up.
- There was confusion about who this RTO Inspection officer was and when they would arrive. Turns out that they will arrive only at the last possible minute so that there is a sizable crowd to dispose off at one go. So I had to wait until around 11:45 am for the inspector to arrive.
Take a water bottle, biscuits, and some phone entertainment with you to pass the time. - There was some confusion about taking a pencil impression of the chassis number. Since it was already printed on the form, I felt maybe it was no longer needed. However, there was a flurry of activity in the assembled crowd to take this pencil imprint so I got jittery. I approached an officer there, took their help, and paid 200 bucks for their trouble. Yes, this grease is necessary. On the plus side, they did it very quickly and effectively and gave me complete peace of mind.
- Suddenly at around 11:45 am, the RTO Vehicle inspector shows up and sits at a table and chair set up for him. His side-kicks start shouting at the crowd to line up the cars and bikes in a line. Everyone scrambles but somehow a queue emerges.
- Mine was the 4th car in line. Reached the desk, opened the bonnet, and presented my folder to the inspector who didn't move a millimeter from his chair. Everything on my car was perfect except for a 4cm scratch on the left front passenger door. That was enough to trigger the vehicle inspector and he shouted something like "There's a scratch, I won't approve. Fix it and come back. NEXT!!". His sidekicks urged me to move on.
Lesson learned: Find out which side the vehicle inspector will sit on and ensure that side as well as the front of the vehicle are perfect to look at.
- Though frustrated, I had to move on. I looped around the parking lot, parked my car, and composed myself. Then I picked up my folder, left my car in the parking, and walked over to the inspection area.
- I waited for about 5 minutes and by this time, he had disposed off all the vehicles and asked his side-kicks if that was all for the day. They said yes, and he smiled. Instinctively I jumped in front of him, folded my hands, made what I thought were puppy eyes, and held out my file ready for him to sign on it. I don't know if it was my pitiful theatrics or his happiness at being done for the day that he signed off on the form immediately! He then told me to go to some counter and get the stamp. I thanked him profusely, thanked my lucky stars, and rushed to the counter.
- Got the stamp done. From there, I was directed to one last counter for submission. Job done! Phew!
The RC Smart Card arrived by India Post a month later, as mentioned by the person at the last counter.
Its time to renew my Pulsar; unfortunately Vahan says that "Renewal of Registration is not allowed for your vehicle. For more details please contact to your state coordinator."
What does this mean and what is the way forward?
Background
My Pulsar is registered in May 2004. The first re-registration was performed in 2019. On the card that I had received, the validity is till December 2024.
With that in mind, I thought of checking the Vahan site, but as I entered the Chassis details it came with the above prompt.
Is there a period before which I cannot renew?
If not, then how do I re-register my Pulsar?
Green taxes etc are cleared and are valid till Apr-2029

As per the current law in many states (or probably in all except Delhi NCR) second registration can be done without any inspection or fitness check after completing the first registered 15 years.
But for the 3rd registration onwards, you need to get the fitness checked. Thats why they mentioned to contact the concerned officials.

For the first re-registration (which I guess you are referring to as the second registration) I had fill the form and then visited the RTO for verification etc and work done.
For my Second re-registration, I have no issue to visit the RTO, but unless I am able to fill up the form what will I do over there? I understand that the team over there (RTO officials) is supposed to check the vehicle in person and (ensuring that its working as expected) and that is accepted, but if the site does not allow me to fill up details in the first place, how do I proceed?
I guess just visiting there would make no sense
This is an incredibly useful thread. My Vento completes 15 years in January 2026 which means I will need to initiate the process of renewal/FC around this time next year.

No. Actually I paid more than that. Rs. 62,149/- Total taxes were around Rs. 60,xxx and they take the money only through a debit or credit card. |
That's insane. JH RTOs are obviously strapped for money to be charging such high fees. I think most states charge around 10K or so tops.

So the address update can be part of the FC process, right? My car is registered on my address at the time which was a rental home that I don't live in anymore. Although I updated my DL address using Aadhar, never bothered with RC. Since I have time, I may go ahead and get the address updated before starting the FC process. Let's see.

You can start the renewal process 60 days before RC expiry. From April-2024, cars more than 15 years old will have to undergo automated Fitness check and cars more than 20 years old would be mandatorily scrapped. |
Is the highlighted part true across India? Some folks in KA are reporting extending FC even beyond 20 years.

I am surprised there is NO single central mandate for renewal of vehicles, rather than every state having it's own rules. |
The unfairness of some states when it comes to inter-state movement of vehicles is something that Gadkari should have made a priority. "One nation, one road tax" should be the clarion call!

a.Window tint needs to be removed even if it is clear tint. b.Plates need to be changed to the HSRP ones
c.Extra light bar needs to be removed.
d.As the car is an 8 seater, it is apparently registered as a transport vehicle and some other tax needs to be paid for that as well?
e. Total cost if we were to do it through an agent is around 10-15k |
I got my plates updated at some point but very much doubt they are HSRP. Where do I get those? Are there private providers or do I need to fill another form at the RTO? :Frustrati
