The buyers have to get their priorities right and make the right choice.

The Scorpio-N with its FSD suspension along with Watts linkage at the rear and ventilated disc brakes on all wheels will offer a much sorted ride (relatively) and can be used as a proper rugged and comfortable cross country touring vehicle for a family of 5(practically) with lot of luggage over long distances on the highway at good speeds even on bad road conditions.

The 5 door Thar from the spy pictures seems to have no FSD, no Watts linkage, drum brakes at the rear. It will not be as comfortable and not as safe a handler(at speeds)
compared to the Scorpio N. However it will be a very competent/hardcore offroader with the extra wheelbase reducing its ramp over angle (compared to the 3 door Thar).

The buyer has to decide between a 4X4 long distance tourer (Scorpio N) and a hardcore offroader used typically for shorter distances (5 door Thar)

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

Any thoughts if 5 door Thar convertible would be feasible and practical?

I'm strongly considering booking Thar AT/CT. I may wait for a few months if 5 door CT is on the charts, I really doubt there will be enough demand for Mahindra to consider this variant though.

.
They will at best (from a structural rigidity point of view), have to provide a means to remove a section or two sections of the roof in order to ‘let the weather in’ like the Wrangler Freedom Top OR, create a completely removable and stowable roof in a series of panels.
Frankly such features(like what the Wrangler or BestTop have) cost a huge amount of time and money in development, moulds and dies, Testing, homologation, etc.
With this in mind, I do not think we ll be getting a convertible 5 door Thar or a flexi roof option either.
It would be sensible if they consider a durable all metal roof like the Bolero used to have. And perhaps offer a sun roof or even an panoramic sun roof. This will also cost big money so no idea if they will oblige, especially since most things here are ‘engineered to meet a price’.

Agree, there is a reason why convertibles / targa tops etc. are a fair bit pricier and rarer than their 'normal' siblings. Add the fact that this is a SUV with higher chances of rollover, and I'd be surprised if M&M actually manage to pull this particular rabbit out of their hat.

The 5 door Thar looks like a 4.5 meter vehicle in this pic? Any comments on the size?

All existing reports point to the 5-door version being 300mm longer than the 3-door. The extra 300 mm has been added to the wheelbase to accomodate the rear doors.

Guess it could be shorter in length than the Scorpio-N so that they could potentially price less than the Scorpio. I think if the price is over 22L or 23L OTR may it may not find many takers.

I don't understand the logic of having the rear door handle mounted near the windows. It kind of kills the overall look of the vehicle in my opinion.

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

Mahindra Thar (5d) to be unveiled on August 15th but will go on sale in 2024.

Will come with 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol engines.

Thar 5-door will sit above the 5-door Jimny
Will go on sale next year in India
Quote:
unlike the 4-passenger layout of the Jimny and the 3-door Thar, the 5-door Thar will almost certainly seat five, and there’s also the possibility of a third row given the added length, as is evident in the spy shots.
Quote:
the SUV will essentially adopt the design of the Thar 3-door but with the addition of rear doors and an increased length. The increase will be around 30mm between the wheels and the overall length will stretch beyond the 4-metre mark, which the 3-door Thar currently fits within. Given that it will breach the 4m mark, it will not qualify for the small car tax benefit and thus we are unlikely to see the recently introduced 1.5-litre diesel under its hood. The rest of the powertrain specs will mimic the current 3-door model.

Engine should receive higher state of tune when compared to 3 door. Bookings might start this year and delivery from Republic Day.

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

For me the most important thing to observe is that the launch will happen in South Africa. How this will be achieved? With all the legal issues and embargoes FCA has against this Thar design? Mahindra should clarify this first before going out and do this. This might only give bad press. You don't want someone to slap legal case against your product as a copycat whatever the real problem behind.

As rightfully pointed out here, legal issues with FCA could hinder the launch in any overseas market if they stick to the design language of the current Thar. Perhaps Mahindra has redesigned the front facia and some other bits of the 5 door Thar to differentiate itself from the Wrangler (square headlights, different grille, different body panels, etc).
