Tamil Nadu: Carmakers can operate factories at full capacity

The government of Tamil Nadu has allowed export-oriented industries to operate at full capacity after a drop in Covid-19 cases. These include carmakers like Renault-Nissan, Hyundai and Ford.

Earlier, Renault-Nissan workers had approached the Madras High Court seeking a complete plant shutdown. They had alleged that social distancing norms were being flouted at the factory and the risk to their lives outweighed the health benefits provided by the company.

While the Renault-Nissan plant was shut down for a short period of time, Hyundai and Ford too decided to halt operations following worker protests.

New Covid-19 cases in the state have fallen to about 8,000 a day from a peak of more than 30,000 in May.

Definitely encouraging news on both fronts. Drop in cases as well as opening up of operations. I hope we manage to get the virus situation under control everywhere so that commerce can commence. Hopefully, worker unions don't play spoil sport and contribute 100% efforts.

Government permission is fine. But I hope this (Is it ethical on the part of carmakers to work during the lockdown?) doesn't repeat. Employees must step up and work towards the objectives of the organization, following due safety protocols. Lockdown or no lockdown, the show must go on.

Madras high court calls for probe of Renault-Nissan plant's social distancing

Source : TOI Auto

Quote:
Madras high court on Tuesday asked the Tamil Nadu state government to inspect a Renault-Nissan plant on July 3 to check whether social distancing norms are being followed.

The call for an inspection from the Madras High Court follows a review of Ford, Hyundai and Renault-Nissan plants by Tamil Nadu state officials last week, which said the nature of work in assembly lines posed challenges in maintaining social distancing.

The guidelines apply to all carmakers including Ford and Hyundai. However, only the Renault-Nissan factory will be inspected as unions at other automakers have not raised objections, the court said.

One would have gotten a truer picture if they had conducted a surprise visit rather than announcing in advance. This may simply result in stricter monitoring only for 3rd July, and reverting to older methods once done with the visit.
